Great spot for a morning coffee break. Had a delicious hot chocolate with generous serving of real whipped cream on top. We couldn't resist trying the strawberry-rhubarb crisp and a delicious date loaf. Coffee was geat too! Cute room too and very friendly welcome.

This cafe seems to express, to me, what the heart of Haida Gwaii is. Welcoming, friendly, a gathering place to explore and converse, fantastic food and right across from the water, and traditions/culture that are so old and so rich. The food here is superb! They have mastered the blend of textures, tastes and created the most amazing place to be nourished by good food and meeting new people. Their daily pizzas are delicious and their tacos are amazing - the curried prawn taco is fantastic. We stopped in here sometimes later in the day to pick up a salad (greens, goat cheese, nuts and great dressing) to take back to our accommodation and have for our supper. The coffee is great too. The owner is always chatting with guests, sharing photos and giving tips on places to enjoy on Haida Gwaii.
The property now known as Junebug Café and Gifts has a long history in Queen Charlotte. In the 1980s it was a burger restaurant and then from about the mid-1990s to early 2000s, it was Summerland Pizza and Steak. For quite a while, Summerland was the place to go for pizza â consistency was always spot on; the service excellent; and the pizzas always chockful of delightful toppings! Then, in the early 2000s, things began to change: the quality dipped. Pizzas were inconsistent in their quality (often very greasy) and the once good pasta dishes were pedestrian. I remember a friend of mine ordered lasagna and, on the surface, in looked good â but only on the surface. . .below the surface layer, the dish was literally just plain lasagna noodles. Seriously, you canât make this stuff up. Itâs no wonder the property closed for an extended time. Then, more recently, the property was turned into Junebug. And that brings us to today:Junebug Café and Gifts isnât really a restaurant per se, it is more of a coffee shop. That said, this little place in Queen Charlotte is pretty fantastic: it carries a great selection of gelatos (the blood orange flavor is my personal favourite!), coffees, cakes and cookies, all of which are homemade. Besides the food/snack items, Junebug also carries an interesting collection of gifts, the focus being hand-made, upcycled and vintage. One could easily spend an extended period in this shop browsing the many gifts. Some of them are so strange and/or cute, youâll be compelled to buy (as I did!). After all, who could resist the little handmade mouse items? So, if youâre in the mood for some gelato, cookies or coffee, or you need a unique gift for that loved one, then why not check this place out? The gelato alone makes it worth the visit!FOOD/GIFTS: 4/5SERVICE: 4/5VALUE: 3.75/5RECOMMENDATION: Come for the delightful treats, stay to browse the excellent gift collection!
