Urke kaihus is a cafe where you can enjoy the view in beautiful Sorroundings of the most amazing Fjord in Norway. Here you can sit outside and enjoy while eating home made waffles, chocolate and cake. Or maybe have a ice cold beer.
Urke is beautiful. The Kaihus on the waterfront is beautiful. And this arm of the Hjorundfjorden that it nestles beside at the foot of the Sunnmore Alps is beautiful too. Catch it while you can - before the world of large-scale tourism arrives and stamps its mark on the landscape, the people and the little businesses like this that combine to create a unique experience for the small number of folk that have so far discovered it.Urke Kaihus offers you hot drinks, beers, soft drinks and a small selection of tempting cakes, buns and waffles - the carrot cake is delicious. If it's chilly you can sit inside on their sofas and enjoy Dean Martin era music softly playing in the background. It's got an easy, informal atmosphere and is lit by candles. If it's sunny then they have plenty of outside seating where you can sit and stare in awe at the gorgeous scenery - the steeply wooded mountains that rise up out of the fjord, the glistening water and the little boats that occasionally leave the jetty. These guys take cash or cards. English is a bit hit and miss but it doesn't matter as you get by and somehow it works. If you're arriving by car then just take the turning from the 655 main road through the village - they have a little sign to direct you down and there's plenty of free parking. The toilets are spotless, smell super fresh and are there for everyone to use (outside door at the back of the building gets you access). So if you're passing through on the 655 heading to or from the ferry at Leknes then it's worth stopping off.Prices? It's Norway so need I say any more! Best to forget converting it back into your local currency and just enjoy the experience. Finally, there's a little community grocery store in Urke owned and operated by the people that live here. They did this to stop it closing down so, if you're in the area, pop in and spend a few NOK - they'll appreciate it!Overall verdict? Different, unique and beautiful. A million miles away from the city, the rush and the stress of 21st century life in Oslo, Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, London or New York - quite a contrast then. Enjoy!
Cozy family friendly Asian restaurant with a large variety menu. We use as much as local produce as possible and put pride in supporting the local community. Welcome to us!
the staff is the kindest, and there's student prices for a lot of things on the menu I always enjoy being at My kitchen
