While travelling it is wonderful to sample the local cuisine but often a great relief to find a quality restaurant with more familiar fare. A cozy english style teahouse with many western food options at reasonable prices. I found the staff very welcoming and friendly and able to serve me although my Chinese is extremely limited. There is seating on the second floor deck overlooking the lake if weather permits. They also had a fascinating display of jade jewelry which appeared to be very high quality. Overall a very satisfying experience in a beautiful Chinese city. I discovered this teahouse early in my trip and it became my 'go to' place for a reliable tasty meal.

The Butchers Hook and sister restaurants Amigos, Southern Cross Bar and Indian at the Cross offer such great menu variety and all of great quality. From simple food to a surf and turf. The best thing is one person can have Indian food and another Mexican and yet another steak! Where else can you do that?! Amazing friendly staff. Also have great brunch and offer free flow specials on beer and wine and more. Check it out if in Suzhou

Jane's Pub Bar

Ok, Sunday afternoon, both mid and late (went in twice), hence why probably not fair on the place, so do take this review with a pinch of caution.I was the only customer for both visitations,a total of 2.1/2 hours (1+1./2). So it was 'quiet and reflective' for me, free Wi-Fi a godsend. Staff were discreet but chatty when approached. none spoke English until Jane herself arrived at circa 5pm. I had 2 types of drink, carlsberg (was fine) and guinness - I took this back as it was off, not bad, off. I was still charged in full for the drink, either that or the carlsberg was 70RMB the second time around.Perhaps I will go back later in the day (and a different day also) for a better experience, but perhaps not, Suzhou is big enough to warrant exploring on a wider basis.
