Find out what Barbecue restaurants to try in Linville. Linville is a community centered just south of the US 221 and NC 105 intersection in Avery County, North Carolina. The community—at times known as Clay or Porcelain—was founded in 1883 and designed by Samuel T. Kelsey of Kansas, and named for William and John Linville, who were killed by Cherokees in 1766. The East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad ("Tweetsie") passed through the community from 1916 until 1940, when a major flood washed away the tracks. The old rail route later became NC 105 in 1956.

Old Hampton Store and BBQ

We stumbled onto this store when we pulled into Linville looking for a place to eat lunch before heading up Grandfather Mountain. We consulted Tripadvisor and were delighted to discover it's the #1 place to eat in town and we were less than 500 yards away! The store won our hearts the minute we drove up. This is no reproduction. This store will celebrate it's 100th anniversary this month. It's the real deal. We loved the atmosphere. Clean and bright, appropriately decorated inside, but obviously much like it was decades ago, which is a good thing in this case. We were warmly received by the hostess who told us everything we wanted to know about the history of the store and the bbq. You place your order at a counter, sit wherever you want inside or on the front porch, and they bring your food to you. Bty the time we left, every seat inside and out was taken, which tells you something. You can find the menu online. Not real long, but what we had was real good! After you eat, wander over to the building next door to see some of the interesting local crafts, and step out back to see the stage where you can listen to live music at night on the weekend while you eat. There's an old bbq shed out there and an old side building with a big, original "Clabber Girl" metal sign nailed over the door. Like I said, "the real deal." We're glad we went.

Carolina Barbeque

We found ourselves in Newland and decided to try Carolina BBQ. Being from the deep south I am somewhat of a BBQ snob. Without a doubt this place is good enough for competition. I had the small BBQ plate that was enough for two. It was a good combination of inside and outside meat with good bark and a solid smoke ring. You could tell it was prepared with great attention. The sides of potato salad and beans were delicious as well. The owner Dave came by and chatted with us and he and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. Nothing fancy or pricey here just good quality BBQ. We will be back.

The Pedalin' Pig Bbq

The chopped pork was ok- not as much flavor as I would have liked. The hushpuppies were tasty. The traditional North Carolina red bbq slaw was too sweet for me and would have benefitted from a bit more vinegar. Others in our group loved their meals having ordered a variety plate. The portion sizes are tremendous!
