Elvas (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈɛɫvɐʃ]) is a Portuguese municipality, former episcopal city and frontier fortress of easternmost central Portugal, located in the district of Portalegre in Alentejo. It is situated about 200 kilometres (120 mi) east of Lisbon, and about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) west of the Spanish fortress of Badajoz, by the Madrid-Badajoz-Lisbon railway. The municipality population as of 2011 was 23,078, in an area of 631.29 square kilometres (243.74 sq mi). The city itself had a population of 16,640 as of 2011.

That's an honest and comfortable restaurant, with good food and service. The clams with coriander, although the clams were not the best, they were fresh and very well cooked, with an excellent taste. The "bacalhau dourado" very good. The price very adjusted.

We had dinner on the first night of our stay at the hotel. Deciding to have a pre-dinner drink we studied the huge wine list and made our choice. After visiting the cellar the maître d' told us that our first choice white was not available - a sign of what was to come - but the second choice was available and was ok. Once seated at our table and our food orders placed, our friends chose several reds in succession and after each trek to his cellar our maître d' sadly told us each one was out of stock, but if our friend would like to come with him, he would let him chose from what he had!. We did get a good wine eventually to go with the food. The scrambled egg with tomatoes starter was really good, but the cabrita (kid) mains were skinny and dry, and the deserts very ordinary. THe following morning at breakfast, the staff showed us huge armfuls of wine delivered that morning to re-stock the cellar. The staff were excellent which made up a little for the disappointing food.
