As Provincial Capitals go, Maasin So. Leyte is small town provincial. There are no attractions, few restaurants, little entertainment and even the Metro Hypermarket and Citi Hardware supply chains don't work.So it was quite a thrill to walk into the Ciudad Cafe & Bar where it looked, sounded and felt like one had been transported directly to Remedios Circle in Malate, City of Manila! (Ciudad means city and is pronounced sue-dad)Here you get a designer style blacked-out warehouse ceiling, unpainted concrete floor, ceiling-high windows, wall murals strategic lighting and mood music; all complimented by a variety of ceramic and wooden topped tables featuring high and low style seating. There is even a deep leather couch, ala The Mentalist, that would put Friends to shame and real off-street parking for 8-cars!This aptly named Cafe and Bar has a great selection of hot and cold Cafe beverages and a Bar that looks like real cocktails could be made behind it. However there is just the usual anemic local variety of beers and wines, so definately more effort is required there. The Menu categories are Pasta (3 choices), Rice Toppings (3 choices), Appetizer Chows (8 choices), Burgers (5 choices), All Day Breakfast (mostly Filipino, 5 choices), faithful Sizzling Sisig and a single Pizza choice. Not exactly fine dining and definitely not for the vegetarian set. But a fair selection of dishes suitable for an American or Filipino palate. The Burgers seem rather expensive, but most other dishes are competitively priced. My chicken fingers with a few french fries was fresh and hot and my coconut & pandan shake was green and tasty.Check the selection of made-in-house salsa (but Nachos are neither on the menu nor for sale. Ha, ha).Ciudad Cafe & Bar: highly recommended (Maasin needs more such ambitious enterprises and for this one to thrive... so get over there and spend, spend, spend).Footnote: seems there is a Ciudad Coffee & Bar version in Baybay, Leyte too-- end --
