Things to do in Ponta do Ouro
Recommended by all the locals!Mama Alice runs a traditional little eatery in the Baraca's (market) section of Ponta do Ouro. Its quite an experience trundling down little back alleys to find her restuarant!!!She pretty much only serves mildly spiced grilled chicken together with fries, a traditional spinach type of veg on the side aswell as pap (maize meal). You generally have to book in advance and are served pretty quickly once you get there. She will wash your hands on arrival with warm soapy water and again after your meal. A rather unique touch!!!The restaurant is basic but clean. Its a true reflection of simple living and eating in Mozambique. The meal is dirt cheap and so are the ice cold beers that are available to purchase. And if you really lucky Alice will turn up the music and dance to some gospel music for you!Make sure you interact with her and the other local patrons. Its really a wonderful experience.
Mozam is generally very slow when it comes to ordering and receiving your food. This restaurant however was really great! The service was friendly and quick and our food arrived quite quickly as well. The portions where large and the food was very tasty. The view of the wetlands is also gorgeous! The only downfall is that smoking is permitted throughout the restaurant.
