Cantine del Notaio is glad to welcome new friends and Italian and foreign guests to taste its wines, visiting the ancient Franciscan grottoes of volcanic tufo radiating around the 'Facile', telling you about stories, territory tradition and about wine growing. Please Note: Excursion and/or wine tasting, need to be booked two days first.
We had a wonderful tour to the underground cellar of this winery and then enjoyed its rose wine and two best reds. The last red is the most impressive and perhaps delivers the profound character of Aglianico to me. This has added so much premium to our unforgettable journey to the south of Italy.

We had a brilliant time with Luca enjoying the wines he and his sister produce. His wine cellar is in the centre of Melfi which was a surprise to me as I assumed this would all be done out of town- I now know that wine ageing cellars are often found in the towns in Southern Italy. Luca gave us a very interesting talk/ discussion on wine production and importantly how the geology of the area impacts on the grapes and wine making process. He was incredibly passionate and knowledgeable. His English was very good despite claiming otherwise! The wines produced by the Cantina are brilliant examples of Lucana/ Basilicata wine with great care taken and skill imparted. We thoroughly enjoyed the aglianicos that we tried and were very pleased to buy a couple of bottles to take home. I would highly recommend a visit - it will be enjoyed by all, irrespective of your existing knowledge.

The D’Angelo winery, whose name has been identified with the Aglianico wine for approximately a century, represents for Basilicata the history of this wine. Rocco and Erminia D’Angelo sons of Lucio keep focusing their efforts on the constant improvement of the quality of their products, which start first of all in the constant improvement of the quality of their approx. 35 ha of winery-owned vineyards. The winery has 35 Ha of winery-owned vineyard, and produces 300.000 bottles yearly. The company has 2 estates, the first one is used for the wine-making process and the second one for the ageing (barrels and barriques).
Casa Vinicola D’Angelo is the historical winery from Basilicata and great source of traditional Aglianico del Vulture wine. Passion is the key of success thank to siblings Rocco and Erminia D’Angelo whom are the fourth generation of this incredible estate.Their wines are a true interpretation of the territory. This is a must see winery.

Located near the town of Barile, This winery is managed by a young and passionate lady, Elena Fucci. Her grandfather purchased the vineyards almost 60 years ago, but Elena started the winery in 2000. Her father and grandfather made wine, but only for the family's consumption, selling the rest of the grapes to other producers in the region. The vineyards are located in a hilly area of the Taurasi region, leading to excellent drainage and high quality grapes. The right exposure to sunshine and the privileged climate of the region combined with the volcanic soil make this an excellent terroir. Elena Fucci herself gave us the tour through the winery and conducted the vertical tasting of her flagship red wine, Titolo, 100% Aglianico. This wine has been recognized by many wine critics as one of the leading Agllianicos del Vulture and it alone is worth the visit.
