Top 10 Wine Tours & Tastings in Montevideo, Montevideo Department

January 24, 2022 Almeta Stockton

Montevideo, a port city and the capital of Uruguay, is a perfect destination for travelers looking for a relaxing stroll past colonial era buildings and along beautiful beaches. The Ciudadela Gateway, the only remaining section of the wall that once surrounded the entire city, now serves as the entrance to Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo's oldest neighborhood. Home to churches, museums, and theaters, at night the area comes alive with nightclubs playing Tango and Candombe music for crowds of dancers.

He's a great conversationalist and did an excellent job with providing an amazing wine tasting experience! The tour was very good and picked us up at our hotel. We then listened to our guide who explained the itinerary and a bit of history. Our first stop was Piriapolis which was charming. We went to the top of the Cero for a great view and photo opportunity. The tour takes you to the Casapueblo which is an amazing tribute to the famous artist - Carlos Paez Vilaro. It looks like Santorini on steroids. We then went through the back streets of Punta del Este and our guide explained why it's the home of the "rich and famous." We stopped near Play Brava and had some free time to photograph and get a snack. It's a long tour but it's worth it.

My husband and I booked the Best Private and Personalized City Tour in Montevideo for cruise passengers as we had never been to that city. I was able to stay in contact with the tour operator through WhatsApp which gave me an extra layer of comfort. Our tour guide Alvaro picked us up on time right outside of the cruise terminal. His English was great and he was very knowledgeable about the city. Everywhere we went, someone knew him! He spoke about the history of his city, showed us the old town, the historical rich area, government buildings, beautiful architecture, and of course all of the main attractions. We also escaped the downtown area for a bit and explored the beautiful beaches and the area where many of the embassies are located. Overall we were very happy with this tour and because of the personalized aspect of it, we were able to venture and see areas that appealed to us more. I believe that we got to see double the amount of attractions and probably learnt more about the history and day-to-day life of Uruguay than any tour we would have booked on the ship. Alvaro dropped us off at the Meat Market where we tried some of the local BBQ before we headed back onto the ship. We arrived with plenty of time to spare and enjoyed the entire day. Thank you Andres and Alvaro for everything.

I live in Montevideo and wanted to learn more about the Uruguay wine scene. I tried out Wine Explorers and found Victoria and Tavis to be excellent guides and very communicative. They are very organized and do the tours in both English and Spanish. The bodegas we have visited have all been rockstar wines and a unique and wonderful experience for someone new to the wine scene and for a seasoned connoisseur. I highly recommend going on these tours.
