So many of Madrid’s buildings look like castles, you’ll think you’ve stumbled into a fairytale. Even City Hall is astounding, with its white pinnacles and neo-Gothic features. A self-guided architecture tour can begin by the great bear statue in the central Puerta del Sol. Wander by the fanciful Royal Palace before absorbing the natural beauty of Retiro Park, then visit one of the city’s many museums. You could happily cap off each day by nibbling on forkfuls of paella while sipping Spanish rioja.

The Prado has innumerable gems which are best appreciated through the lens of the extremely interesting but convoluted history of Spain. Marta was the perfect guide, refreshingly buoyant and infinitely knowledgeable about the art and history. You'll start with Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights and move on to the wonderful collection of Velazquez and eventually end with great insights into Goya's profound contributions. A private guide may be pricey for one or two, but you avoid the lines and dig effortlessly through the crowds. Definitely worth it and highly rated.

We took an Urban Adventures Tapas and drinks walking tour of Madrid last week and despite the fact that it was raining heavily most of the time, we had a fantastic night with the most wonderful, knowledgeable and pleasant guide ever - Leila. We visited several tapas bars including the San Miguel Market which is great fun. Leila was full of interesting facts and we learned so much about the real Madrid. I would highly recommend Urban Adventures (I have been on others of their excursions in various cities) and Leila in Madrid especially.

Luke and Roque know their stuff and their stuff is Spanish wines! The "Inside the bottle" wine tasting in the shop were lots of fun where you not only could taste awesome wines but also learn about spanish wines, culture and meet very interesting people from all over the world. During lockdown Luke and Roque came up with the idea of "Lockdown wine tasting". Their selection of wine boxes (sent to your home) matched the expectations: nothing less than excellent wines! (and at affordable prices) . If you visit Madrid, do not hesitate to stop by their shop (very close to plaza Mayor, so no excuse!), you won't regret it!

We have always loved eating empanadas in Spain, especially those in Galicia, so it was thrilling to learn how to make them under the skilled instruction of Arantxa. She showed us exactly how to make an empanada, from the dough to the filling, while also discussing the interesting history of this classic Spanish food. A week later, I made my first empanada at home according to Arantxa's recipe. It was delicious and I can't wait to make another. It is going to become part of my regular rotation, as there is so much variety of what you can stuff the dough with. I recommend any cooking class with Arantxa. Even on Zoom, which is not easy, she was a very engaging teacher.
