Top 10 Wine Tours & Tastings in Castile-La Mancha, Castile-La Mancha

June 17, 2021 Alice Mieles

Castile-La Mancha, a Spanish land of craggy cliffs, golden fields and red soil, produces savory Manchego cheese, olives, saffron and more than its share of mystery. Chase the enduring legend of Don Quixote among the windmills of Campo de Criptana. Pass through the Bisagra Gate to experience the walled city of Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage site that pays stylistic tribute to the Christian, Jewish and Islamic cultures. In Guadalajara, palaces and Baroque churches capture the imagination.

We had the awesome opportunity to share in this olive farm regeneration experience with Laura leading the tour. You will be fascinated with the strategy for organic farming and fiscal sustainability. Your first stop is meeting Laura or Guillermo at the village bus stop for personal escort (5-10 minutes) to the farmland. The earth is dry, sand like due to no rain. Laura provides straw hats and water. We stood for various lectures in the olive tree shade to learn of the challenges and hopeful success in the dedicated effort to bring the family heir-loomed farm to the next 100 years. The tour moved to the refurbished hen house for a comfortable olive oil tasting and tapas with wine (or juice). Toilet on site here. A very unique way to spend part of your day before venturing to Toledo or back to Madrid.

This winery is one of the oldest in Valdepeñas. It is famed for the beautiful stone carved wine cellar with its huge clay vessels on which famous Spanish poets wrote their poems on. Although currently no wine is being produced in the winery, it is worth a visit since there is no other winery like this. It is a private and very personal visit since Andrés, the owner of the winery, helped his father as a a small child to produce wine here. He will show you the winery and give you historical information about the winery and the wine in this region.

We had the most beautiful time at Taste of La Mancha. They welcomed us with open arms and were completely accepting of our inexperience but our interest in learning about wines and food parings. They ensured we were comfortable and content throughout and we had a brilliant time, both tasting the wine and learning about Valdepeñas culture. Thank you all for an amazing experience! X

Went to the tasting last night to celebrate a birthday. The host, Anna, spoke very little English so it was difficult for us to understand the full experience. We sampled three wines and three olive oils along with a variety of cheeses, as well as water and crackers for cleaning the palette. I learned a lot about olive oil, the different qualities and flavors.

Wonderful experience if you've got a 3+ day trip planned to Catalonia. You'll meet up and take a 45-ish minute bus ride to up to Montserrat and go on a tour of the monastery and have a chance to buy some premium products (olive oils, liqueurs, etc.). You'll get some free time to explore on your own and then ride the train down the mountain to a local ranch where you'll get paired up with your horse. It was my first time riding a horse in about 15-20 years, but they made it as easy as possible. The horse tour through the country side lasts somewhere between 1-2 hours and the views are breathtaking.
