Top 10 Wine Bars in Sydney, New South Wales

November 1, 2021 Jasper Kershner

Sydney offers plenty of historical and contemporary Australian flavor. The marvelous Sydney Opera House looks like a great origami sailboat, floating peacefully in a harbor. Wander the narrow cobblestone streets of The Rocks and then take in a street performance on the Circular Quay before heading into the Museum of Contemporary Art. The views from the Sydney Tower Eye observatory are epic – use this chance to get to know the layout of the city from high above.

Urban Winery Sydney

The city’s first true urban winery and the city heart of the A.Retief wine label. Urban Winery Sydney is in The Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park and includes a full functioning open winery, a cellar door and wine bar, and an event space. It’s a place to enjoy and discover the very best of NSW wine and produce, including our very own A.Retief wines hand-crafted on site.

A work colleague initially recommended that I visit the Urban Winery Sydney in their brand new premises conveniently located within the Entertainment Quarter Sydney. Not knowing a whole lot about the facility, my wife and I thought we would drop into the wine bar for a pre-game glass of Shiraz before the Swans game. Initially looking for just a decent glass of wine, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that this is an actual working winery in the heart of the city! Not only are the wines absolutely fantastic within a hip relaxed setting, this is where the wine is actually made with grapes sourced from various cold climate regions in NSW. There are winery tours, blending master classes, cellar door sales and wine tasting experiences all available which actually blew my mind. They even hire the venue for Weddings and corporate functions! Whilst there I was lucky enough to meet the chief winemaker Alex Retief who was a wealth of knowledge on all things wine. Alex was extremely approachable and you could tell how honestly passionate he is about NSW wines and produce just by talking to him. Going forward this will be my new choice of venue to taste and drink wine but I am very much looking forward to my booked master blending class next week. Pro Tip: Make sure you try the charcuterie board!

The Barber Shop Bar promotes an incredible 700 different gins from around the world. Something here for everyone. In the UK gin is normally supplied in a 50 ml measure. My only complaint with this bar is they pour a 30 ml shot. At a three to one ratio you end up with a smaller drink. Other than that well worth a visit.

Day 1 of our 2 year wedding anniversary and having arrived earlier than anticipated we were welcomed by Kevin and the Manager. Offered a glass of Prosecco to celebrate our day having remembered from the booking. Kevin was our host for the tasting and was a delight, accomodating, knowledgeable and with a cheeky humour made it a fabulous experience. Looked after by the team led by the Management as we moved to the lounge area to taste the exquisite anchovies and crusty bread and truffle salami which was to die for! Wines were across the range but can recommend the Trial Batch and Collection...and...needs the baked Camembert to accompany!! Thanks guys...

I've been for high tea a couple times. The service is always excellent and fast, with extremely friendly waiters and waitresses. The tea trays are always a delight, especially the traditional high tea which has exceptional scones and macaroons. Will definitely be back again!
