Top 10 Walking Tours in Wroclaw, Southern Poland

November 26, 2021 Rebbecca Marino

Surprisingly (except to Poles) pronounced VRAHTS-wahv, Wroclaw is Poland’s fourth-largest city and the capital of the Viovodship of Lower Silesia. Originally (in medieval times) built across several islands, the city still has many lovely bridges and beautiful architecture. Not far from the German border in the country’s southeast, Wroclaw gets lots of German tourists, who call it Breslau. The Rynek (central square), lined by colorful buildings, is one of the city’s most popular destinations.

Visit the site of the most famous escape of World War II from a German prisoner-of-war camp that went down in history as “The Great Escape”. In a tiny compound 600 men worked for a year in secrecy on the tunnels named Tom, Dick, and Harry. Finally, on the night of 24th of March 1944, 76 prisoners managed to escape from the camp through the Harry tunnel but soon after 73 were recaptured during the chase. Outraged, Hitler ordered to shoot dead fifty of them which was an appalling abrogation of the Geneva Convention. Find out more about those dramatic events at the Museum of Allied POW Camps in Żagań, visit the grounds of Stalag Luft III and the memorial to the brave airmen who paid the highest price for an escape they considered a soldier's duty.

Would recommended this to anyone visiting Wroclaw as we were not only able to taste some delicious food but, we learned so much about the local area too. This tour helped us shape the agenda for the rest of our stay based on Oliwia’s recommendations, from the outset she was fantastic. £55 is a small price to pay for the amount of food you get to try (2x soups, dumplings, traditional spreads with bread, potato pancakes, flatbread pizza, Polish donut, beer and vodka) but more importantly you get a down to earth tour of the city with some quality recommendations on the ‘the best places to visit’ on your stay. Thanks Oliwia, we now have a fun filled day planned tomorrow as well as being stuffed from all the grub! Great compliment to the trip, would recommend doing at the beginning of your stay as this takes the pressure off researching things to do.
