Shan State (Burmese: ရှမ်းပြည်နယ်, pronounced [ʃáɴ pjìnɛ̀]; Shan: မိူင်းတႆး [mə́ŋ.táj]) is a state of Myanmar. Shan State borders China to the north, Laos to the east, and Thailand to the south, and five administrative divisions of Burma in the west. Largest of the 14 administrative divisions by land area, Shan State covers 155,800 km², almost a quarter of the total area of Burma. The state gets its name from the Shan people, one of several ethnic groups that inhabit the area. Shan State is largely rural, with only three cities of significant size: Lashio, Kengtung, and the capital, Taunggyi. Taunggyi is 150.7 km north east of the nation's capital Naypyitaw.

We were a group of 3 friends hiking from Kalaw to Inle Lake, organized by Rohit Travels. We communicated with Krishna who then organized Mar Mar as our guide. The entire trip was wonderfully planned, the homestays were authentic and the food plentiful and delicious. The avocado salad was to die for, and Mar Mar always gave us extra chili :) Water was included in our package and Mar Mar made sure we had enough to drink. He showed us many plants and scenery along the way. There were not a lot of other tourists. We mostly walked on small tracks, often encountering no other tourist group for hours. On the third day we drove to the city by boat, and our backpacks had already been transferred to our hotel by the tour company. We can full- heartedly recommend a trip with Mar Mar as a guide!

We are 2 backpackers from France & the Netherlands and we went on a 2 days trekking with Ko Kyaw Kalaw. The trip was one of the best memories that we have of Myanmar. Koko (our guide) has so much knowledge and positive energy, we had many good conversations about different topics in life while we were walking trough incredible nature! Koka was extremly helpfull and friendly, he even borrowed me his shoes because mine seemed way to small, woops :| We had a lot of fun together, saw beautiful mountains, rice fields, flowers and local people on our way. We hardly saw other tourist, which made the trip even more exclusive. The night we stayed at a lovely homestay in the middle of the jungle. Koka carried fish, vegetables & fruit in his backpack (the whole hike) which we used for lunch at a peaceful spot with an amazing view. In the evening we cooked the fish at the homestay and the mom of the family prepared the most delicious meal ever wauw all so fresh and tasty! The family was super welcoming and happy to host us. Their house is lovely, surrounded by huge bamboo trees, kids and chickens :) playing in the fields. After the hike we had beers together to close down the adventure. Many thanks again for this unforgettable memory! We highly recommend everyone to go on a trip with Ko Kyaw Kalaw trekking. All the best, love from Alice & Lotte.
Not alone its size draws a crowd – being one of the largest lakes in the country and home of the Inthar, Inle Lake packs culture and nature all in one go. One of the Shan State most rewarding sights for travel aficionados who are eager to explore all corners of this rich-in-vegetation lake, the region’s fertile grounds also draws farmers to its surface. Farmers have used the constant supply of freshwater as a means to cultivate a large variety of vegetables and crop in such a way that gives visitors new perspectives on observing organic agriculture. Season after season, the finest products reach the outer corners of Myanmar, and this labour-intensive means of crop cultivation forms the centre of this half-day excursion. We follow in the footsteps of the farming communities of Inle Lake where floating gardens and sustainable techniques are shown.

I am playing catch up as I haven't been here in quite a while,In 2016/2017 my partner and I travelled to Myanmar having a 3 week custom private tour. The Team at Tour East were excellent, Not only did everything go as planned the guides provided in each area were extremely knowledgeable and made suggestions re our itinerary to compliment what was already planned. Balloons over Bagan was probably a highlight however the while trip over something for all the senses and the people we met were wonderful.
