Top 10 Walking Tours in Kitulgala, Sabaragamuwa Province

June 29, 2021 Darleen Reid

Kitulgala is a small town in the west of Sri Lanka. It is in the wet zone rain forest, which gets two monsoons each year, and is one of the wettest places in the country. Nevertheless, it comes alive in the first three months of the year, especially in February, the driest month. The Academy Award-winning The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge (and, supposedly, the submerged train cars that plunged into the river in the climactic scene). Kitulgala is also a base for white-water rafting, which starts a few kilometres upstream and also popular as a location for adventure based training programs.

Aruna was a wonderful guide; we could tell that he was proud of his country and wanted us to love it too. He was knowledgeable and took us wherever we wanted to go on top of the itinerary. He certainly chose the best jeep driver for the reserve where we got much closer to the wild elephants than anyone else. He also waited patiently as I looked at multiple pieces of jewellery, finally buying a piece in the shop of his favourite hotel - an Edwardian colonial country house. If you can travel with Aruna, do it - some of the other guides are really just taxi drivers.

What an experience!!, we arrived just as the elephants appeared from the jungle and watched 5 large groups go to the water. The Jeep driver got us into the perfect place for photographs, responding quickly when a female decided we'd got too close. So beautiful to watch the interaction of the family units as they got to the water.
