Top 10 Walking Tours in Dakar, Dakar Region

May 6, 2022 Brain Ambrose

At the westernmost point of the African continent, Dakar stands as a multicultural, diverse city full of vibrant arts and traditions. Residents from various ethnic groups present assorted crafts, foods, jewelry, fabrics and wood and metal goods at bustling markets such as Marche Sandaga or Marche HLM. The city is home to museums and mosques, cliff walks and beaches, and makes a convenient jumping point for excursions to any of Senegal's national parks and nature reserves.

This experience takes you on a tour through two of Senegals's biggest cultural threads: Islam and the idea of cultural preservation. You'll see the cities' mosques with an inside perspective and see the progression of Dakar as a cultural capital in West Africa through it's history and relationship with Islam. Your curator has been showcasing Senegal to visitors for more than two decades and any experience with them shows not only his knowledge of the country but their passion for connecting with people.

Unless poor communication and inconsideration are your thing when paying for an experience, then Tastemakers Africa is not the company for you. I booked a "December in Ghana" trip with Tastemakers Africa, which was supposed to be filled with various cultural experiences, but the entire trip was completely disorganized and there was a serious lack of communication by trip organizers. Being promised a better experience due to a lesson learned by the CEO of Tastemakers Africa I decided to give the company another chance. To my dismay I was seriously disappointed to learn the poor communication and disorganization was still a major attribute of Tastemakers Africa. Although this company obviously hasn't learned their lesson in conducting good business and customer service (evidenced by repeated poor business behavior/practices), I certainly learned my lesson. Take it from me, the headache that comes with booking with Tastemakers is not worth it.

It was hard to find an organisation that makes tours both through Senegal and Gambia. Triptours did a good job, but at the high end of the price rage for relatively cheap locations, unlike we are used to travelling in Asian countries. Realise that your guide should be bi-lingual (French and English) if you want to see both countries. The roads are surprisingly good, so your car can easily drive 100km/h. That is the good news. The bad news is that there is not much to see or do. And if you are at a location like Georgetown or Kuntaur, these are backwaters in the heat with minimal attractions. Anyhow, it was an interesting trip in an old (>12 years) car without airco. The guide, Alpha, was knowledgeable, but more up to date with Senegal than with Gambia. In general, all guides we have seen are more socialising than in Asia. They will f.i. share your meals. Make sure that you check Triptours' advise regarding hotels, you might find better alternatives, such as Sindola Safari Lodge (advisable) and Kinkeliba lodge in Mar Lodj. We finished in Mar Lodj, waiting for a flight out due to the corona crisis. Triptours proved helpful with information, but in the end we escaped with our regular flight after an interesting two weeks.

4. Your professional Joal (the Shell Island) guide

Sensafari Guesthouse

The twin village of Joal and Fadiout are about 110km south of Dakar at the end of tar road that runs along the coast. Joal the birth place of the first president ( Leopold Senghor) is on the mainland while Fadiout is on a small island reached by a long wooden bridge. The island of Fadiout is composed entirely of oyster and clam shell that have been deposited over the centuries. The village of Fadiout covers the island and everything is made of shells. They cover the maze of narrow streets and are embedded the walls of the houses. The centre has a definite charm. The citizens of Joal and Fadiout are rightly proud of their religions tolerance. Christians and muslims live in harmony there, with Fadiout’s shrines to the virgin Mary and large church complemented by an equally large Mosque. The overall feel is one of harmony , and Fadiout has a very relaxed atmosphere. A huge ancient shell mound is reached by another woden bridge and is home to both a Christian and muslim cemetery.

Eric was an amazing guide! I highly recommend him, as he was super friendly and great company on our excursion to Bandia Reserve. I recommend that you reach out to him first before booking as he offers highly customizable experiences that will meet your needs and wants during your visit to Dakar. One of many highlights was after tasting the monkey bread fruit from the Baobab tree, on our way back he purchased us a bottle of the juice. I wish we had more time to take in the rest of the city and surrounding area with him, as he was able to tell us a out each building as we drove through the city to the reserve. Thank you Eric for providing us a wonderful excursion!

We had Mika Guisse as our tour guide during our entire 2021 Senegal and The Gambia trip. He was magnificent. He is so knowledgeable, patient and informative. He made sure our group got to experience so much more than what we would have on our own or with another tour guide. He got us to Goree Island, Kunta Kinteh Island, a Fulani Village where we were welcomed and got to meet the Chief, The Museum of Black Civilization, The Renaissance Monument, Senegalese wrestling, ATV riding and so much more. He even took us to the clinic to get our mandatory COVID-19 test which was needed to travel between Senegal and The Gambia and then back to the clinic to get the test again which was needed to travel back to the US. And the cost for the test was so inexpensive, we really got a bargain. He also took us to the marketplace to do some last minute shopping before our flights back home. We felt so safe with Mika because everywhere we went, everyone knew and respected him. Our group nicknamed Mika the Mayor of Dakar. Any questions you have about anything in Senegal or The Gambia, Mika is the best person for answers. Do yourself a favor and book with Mika and his team.

First of all I want to say that my family & I will definitely be coming back next year to use this same travel company. We've been to Senegal once before without the kids & we we're overpriced. Which apparently happens quite often to first time visitors. So this time I made sure I booked our tour guide with great caution. After comparing prices with this company & the others there, I found this one to tremendously beat the others. But then when it comes to the service. My husband says it honestly can't be compared to any other tour guide experience we've had. I'd have to agree. They were very kind & very knowledgable. Had plenty of ideas & activities for us to do with & without the kids. They were even quick to respond to our questions & concerns we had. Meeting with Abdou was like meeting with an old friend. You can just feel when a person is genuinely happy to do what they're doing & that's what we felt from him. Thank you so much Makaya Travels. My family looks forward to having your exceptional service again soon.
