Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center

Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center is the public face of the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust. We are a nonprofit whose mission is the preservation and restoration of Platte River Valley habitat for whooping cranes, sandhill cranes, and other migratory birds. The Nature & Visitor Center has 10 miles of walking trails, an observation tower, a bison herd, art gallery, gift shop, and informational exhibits. We also offer tourism information for the state of Nebraska. During the spring crane migration, we offer viewing blind tours to see cranes up close on their river roosts and driving maps of the area so visitors can see the cranes while they are in the fields feeding.

The tour was well organized by enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteers. The blinds were right on the riverbank, and the view was amazing. We chose the evening viewing and would like to come again for a morning tour. Can’t say enough good things about the center and the viewing experience. I wish I had taken more time in the gift shop.

Homestead National Historical Park

With the promise of Free Land, the Homestead Act of 1862 enticed millions to cultivate the frontier. Families, immigrants, women, and freed slaves flooded 10 percent of the nation’s land to chase their American Dream. American Indian cultures and natural environments gave way to diverse settlement, agricultural success, and industrial advancement—building our nation and changing the land forever.

Start with the film presentation - sobering & thoughtful film program examines the political impetus to use settlers to push native peoples off their homelands & occupy the interior of US. Brutal environmental challenges compounded with lack of preparation by homesteaders & failure of government to support them - sent into the wilderness to filter the fittest from the weakest. great database set up to see if your family filed for a homestead.

Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Visitor Center

Walk in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark and Seaman the dog on our 79-acre property. Step aboard an authentic full sized 55-foot replica of the Keelboat used by the explorers over 200 years ago. Relive the adventure by exploring our interactive exhibits: burrow with the Prairie Dogs, run with the American Bison, be surprised by our ferocious Grizzly Bear. Listen to the calls of every bird that was documented along the expedition. Pull the oars on the pirogue. Avoid the snags as you race down the Missouri River with our newest exhibit. Go into the 48 foot in diameter Plains Indian Earth Lodge. Follow our trails to the Missouri River Overlook and the Birding Amphitheater. Bring a snack lunch to enjoy at our outdoor picnic area!

This is a hidden gem! If you have any interest at all in Lewis and Clark's travels, you should see this. We spent about two hours here. There are three floors of exhibits and some trails outside, including one to an overlook of the Missouri River. Very nice 30-minute documentary film as well. Highly recommended.

From the Golden Spike Tower the 7th-floor open-air observation deck offered great views the of Union Pacific Railroad Bailey Yard and surrounding area. We enjoyed the 7th-floor open-air observation deck but the fully enclosed 8th floor of the Golden Spike Tower offers some additional information and exhibits. Although Tripadvisor has them listed separately, there is no separate attraction for tourists to visit he Bailey Yard. You view the Bailey Yard from the Golden Spike Tower.

High Point Welcome Center

Reviewed By CrankingChick - Tucson, United States

We found this Welcome Center while driving north on Highway 71. It's located on the south side of Interstate 80 at exit 20. It was definitely a welcome sight as there aren't many services out in the grassland - clean, well-equipped restrooms were a relief! The women that run this tourism office are exceptionally friendly and helpful. They have well-organized travel and tourism information to share for the entire region. We were pleased to find state maps and brochures for some of the attractions we planned to visit. Snacks and drinks are available and there are picnic tables outside. They also have a small gift shop and a free book swap library. We purchased a t-shirt and lingered for quite a while chatting with the knowledgeable hostesses.
