The sun-drenched Canary Islands lie close to North Africa and have an exotic flavor of their own. Hundreds of volcanoes, rolling sand dunes, rich forests and rugged cliffs dapple these seven Atlantic gems. Catch a ferry to Lanzarote. Ride a camel through volcanic Timanfaya National Park. Take on Tenerife, home of Mount Teide, Spain's tallest peak. Romp Grand Canary's beaches or hike La Gomera's Garajonay National Park. More adventures await on tiny El Hierro, verdant La Palma and peaceful Fuerteventura.

Completely free, this museum is particularly dedicated to volcanism and the origin of Tenerife (and other Canary islands). This center makes use of different communication means to explain the island genesis: videos, pictures, illustrations and games. Explanations are very comprehensive and available in all languages. If you have the time, I recommend to watch a short film, in a small cinema theater, that narrates the island story with a mix of legends and scientific facts. Ask for headphones at the reception to listen to the story in your language. If you have had enough of volcanism, you can go outside and have a walk in the arboretum... if the weather is correct of course ???? ! When I was there, the weather was very cloudy and rainy. That's life! So, don't forget to stop a while in this center! Apart from the visit, you can also ask for helpful information if you want to hike in the amazing Teide national park (for example, having an accurate forecast weather). The person at the reception was particularly helpful and speaks different languages.

We visited Valle Gran Rey on a cruise ship at the end of 2016. We found the area to be unspoilt with lovely shops and small local bars and restaurants. We have just received an email telling us we have won a 7 day holiday in Valle Gran Rey, resulting from a questionnaire we completed back in November 2016. We are hoping this is a genuine prize and not a hoax as we would very much like to return to the island.
