With its plentiful beaches, dramatic mountains, and backdrop of samba and bossa nova rhythms, it's easy to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro. Made famous in song, Ipanema Beach is still the place to stroll, sunbathe, and be seen. The largest Art Deco statue in the world, Christ the Redeemer, beckons visitors to Corcovado Mountain. Rio’s annual Carnaval celebrations are bacchanalian extravaganzas of feasting, music, dance, and costumed revelry.

Taxi driver , guide and fotografer with an deep histórical knoladg about the Rio de Janeiro city .
I was originally connected to Alexandre through a work trip to Rio counting on him for local transport. But all work and no play while in Rio would have been a real disappointment and on my last day I was able to slip out early for a great afternoon with Alexandre touring Urca and Sugar Loaf. Throughout the week and especially on my last day I quickly learned that Alexandre is a fountain of local knowledge and always looking out for his guests' interests. Efficient, fair, and very personable, Alexandre is a great chauffeur, tour guide, and even a photographer all rolled into one. Highly recommended for personal and professional trips to Rio.

Lovely ride up the hills to Santa Teresa but the station was challenging to find. I tried using Google maps to map from Impanema to Santa Teresa (thinking it would suggest the cable car) but instead suggested subway plus bus routes. So I went to the subway station from Impanema and took the red line 1 train. Exit at Cinelandia or Caricoa. From there you can exit the subway station and walk to the street car station called “Estáçao de Bondes de Santa Teresa” translated as Santa Teresa cable car station. Look at the street map when you exit the subway to see which way to walk. Once at the station, streetcars run every hour and you will be waiting with other tourists. It’s 20 Real to take the streetcar up and back down. It is a mode of transportation so if you want to get off, you need to ring the bell. The streetcar also stops to pick up locals waiting at tram stops. The streetcar will drop you off anywhere (not just the regular stops) if you ring the bell-which we learned. We got off at the stop for Largo de Guimaraes which blogs had stated as the Main Street with bars, restaurants and shops in Santa Teresa. I followed along on my map to ring the bell as the tram approached the street (following along on Google maps or maps me). We got off slightly early and walked to get to the street but I felt it was safer than missing it all together. In the area we ate at Casa Nossa, which had a lovely ambiance and colonial architecture. Then we caught the train going back down (again they only run once an hour till 5pm-during this time that we are in). We saw the tram and ran after it, so they stopped for us and we hopped on. Difficult to figure out this trip in the beginning, but worth it!

Rio's tramway is a very safe and useful mode to acess Rio's downtown. With 3 lines, the system carries you to the principal points of the central area. The trains rarely are crowded and is very easy to find your way. Although your low operational speed (30kmh), the tramway is more quicker than buses, taxi or uber to take places on Rio downtown.
