Top 10 Transportation in Retiro, Capital Federal District

November 3, 2021 Matilde Konrad

The birthplace of the tango is, like the dance itself, captivating, seductive and bustling with excited energy. Atmospheric old neighborhoods are rife with romantic restaurants and thumping nightlife, and Buenos Aires' European heritage is evident in its architecture, boulevards and parks. Cafe Tortoni, the city's oldest bar, will transport you back to 1858, and the spectacular Teatro Colon impresses just as it did in 1908. Latin America's shopping capital offers the promise of premium retail therapy along its grand, wide boulevards.

Estacion Retiro Mitre

I visited this station many times between 1992-2014 and it was filthy building and unloved. Now it has benefitted from a wonderful and deep clean and an upgrade and is a now a lovely place to travel from or spend some time admiring the ticket office and roof (which needs to be completed!). The local government are spending millions upgrading stations, replacing old ones and extending the underground network ...it is long overdue.

We were in Buenos Aires for 5 days and decided to spend a night in Montevideo by taking the ferry over They charge differently for different passenger categories .... tourists are charged more...about $80 per person for tourist class. Drops you off in both ports, close to city center. Montevideo was worth it and we were happy with the ferry (about 2.5 hours one-way). Very clean, modern and efficient ferry service, You do have to go through passport control and you do this at your departure terminal (for both countries). Thought the Buenos Aires side was a bit more chaotic than the Montevideo side (plan on some time to go through passport control). Duty free shop on board and money exchange. All-in-all, a very good experience and leisure way to get to and from the two cities.
