Top 10 Transportation in Indiana, United States

February 20, 2022 Myesha Cogley

With beaches, boating, and salmon fishing in Michigan City and Gary bordering Lake Michigan, there is more to Indiana than might appear at first glance. The agricultural heartland even has cross country skiing and snowmobiling to go with the Cornball Express. Southwest Indiana near Evansville is renowned for the well-preserved Native American Angel Mounds State Historic Site. The largest city and state capital is famous worldwide for its Indianapolis 500 race. Even locals living in the suburbs often overlook the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Eiteljorg Museum, NCAA Hall of Champions, the old Union Station museum cluster, and downtown Canal Walk, to name but a few landmarks. South Bend is synonymous with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Forested Nashville’s art colony fame dates to the early 1900s when Impressionist Theodore Clement Steele overwintered in The House of the Singing Winds. It is now the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. View paintings and sculpture at the I.M. Pei-designed Indiana University Museum of Art. Attend an IU sports event or an opera, ballet, concert, or theater performance. Treat the family to The Little Nashville Opry or The Bill Monroe Bluegrass Park. For healing mineral springs, head south to Orange County, Indiana’s spa resort center.

Enjoy golf, fishing, boating, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice skating in the nation’s agricultural heartland. Monticello and Rensselaer are west of Logansport and north of Lafayette. Take the family on the Cornball Express and Hoosier Hurricane at the Indiana Beach Amusement Resort in Monticello. Play boardwalk carnival games, or let the kids loose on the go-carts. Pile the family into their vehicles for an old-fashioned movie experience at Monticello’s Lake Shore Drive-In. Indulge in a weekend dinner boat cruise to hot band sounds as the Madam Carroll plies Lake Freeman.

We used Aadvanced Limousines during the 2021 NCAA Tournament in Indianapolis based on the reviews here - we were not disappointed. We used them for transportation to/from the airport to our hotel and they were right on time, sedan was spotless and our drivers were great. We also hired them to drive us to Hinkle Fieldhouse and wait while we enjoyed our basketball game and return us to the hotel. I am so glad they were driving because traffic was insane at the venue and even worse near our hotel when we returned. They had great communication so we always knew our driver was on the way and even how far out they were. We made a great decision using this company and I highly recommend them.

We were pleasantly surprised at how nice this RV Resort was. Large concrete sites, full hookup and room between sites. It was within walking distance to the Casino where breakfast was included with our RV stay. Our reason for staying was the proximity to The Ark and The Creation Museum. It was a nice stay and we'll return next season.

South Shore Line

Reviewed By Canadian_Guy1000 - Toronto, Canada

We were camping in Indiana Dunes National Park for about a week and the train station, Beverly Shores, was located less than 500 meters / 1,640 feet from the park. The station was built in 1925 and there was a large neon sign “Beverly Shores.” South Shore Line operates about 20 passenger trains daily, most running from Chicago’s Millennium Station to Michigan City or South Bend Airport. Because my friend had never visited Chicago—and my only visit had not included Chicago’s downtown—we decided to take advantage of this opportunity and take a train to the Windy City. There was ample parking at the station. The one-way fare from Beverly Shores to Millennium Station was $10 (half for seniors/disabled) and it could be purchased at the station from a vending machine (which we did), or on the train. Since trains only stopped at this particular station if passengers requested so, we had to push a button to activate strobe light. While waiting for the train, we talked to a woman who had come biking with a group, but decided to return home, along with her bike, by train. The train arrived on time—unfortunately, the conductor informed her that she was not allowed to bring the bike on the train at this particular station (it was possible do to so at the next one) due to the station’s platform design and safety regulations. Since it was Sunday, the next train was scheduled in 2 hours or so—well, at least she had plenty of time to get to the next station… There were not too many passengers on the train and we got window seats. Soon the conductor showed up to check our tickets. When I looked at his badge, I immediately noticed his surname. “A very unique and original name, Przybyłowski,” I said, surprising him with the correct pronunciation of his last name, which I bet not too many people could articulate! There was a special rack-equipped car, in addition to regular seating, so that passengers could ride in this car near their precious bikes and keep an eye on them at all times. I think that the special car could accommodate up to 14 bikes. My friend got quite interested in this bike-friendly train concept and kept asking the conductor questions. “But what if there are more than 14 people with bikes on the train, how do you keep track of that?” she asked. A little exasperated, he looked at her and said, “Madam, I think I know how to count to 14!” The whole trip took about 90 minutes. The train stopped at many stations—one of then was in Gary, Indiana, and from the train’s windows I could see the imposing buildings of Gary’s City Hall & Courthouse. We got off at the last stop, Millennium Station, in the heart of Chicago. After spending the whole day in Chicago, mostly on the hop-on-hop-off bus, we headed back to Millennium Station in the evening, where our train had already been waiting. We had to notify the conductor which station we were disembarking at (so that the train would stop there, as Beverley Shores is a request stop) and she advised us to stay in a particular car. In less than 2 hours we arrived at Beverly Shores Train Station, got off the train and drove to our campsite. It was an excellent day trip—inexpensive, fast, comfortable and enjoyable! If it were not for the train, we would have never gone to Chicago (certainly not by car). We are planning to visit Indiana Dunes National Park next year and we are looking forward to getting to Chicago by this very train to explore other landmarks in this remarkable city.
