With an approximate duration of 3 hours, we will start by discovering why they call this territory the “Kingdom of Stone”. The exploitation of aggregates is the main source of income in the region and the use of limestone is evident in the old mills (or what remains of them), houses, walls ... We will visit some of the most emblematic and most beautiful geological formations where you can take some photos. We will discover dinosaur trails and fossils of marine animals. The “dry stone walls” mark the landscape and delimit land where cattle still graze today. We will end at the viewpoint of Pebada over Porto de Mós, from where you can see the whole valley and the Castle, with its green tiles, dominating the village.

I used to be a travel writer based in London, so I've taken quite a few tours. I want to tell you that, in my experience, this is one of the best I've had - very warm, personal, and well-informed. My husband and I wanted an 'orientation' to the Parque Natural de Serra de Aire e Candeeiros, but what Hernâni gave us was far beyond our expectations. He was patient with our non-stop questions and took us through the park and its small hamlets to see dinosaur footprints, explaining the hill formations carved by rushing water and quarrying of limestone over the ages, showing us artistically painted azulejo tiles that unfolded the story of the production of olive oil , and others that paid homage to locals who fought in foreign wars. We visited little lakes and an ingenious water capture and filtration using local materials that provides water for the precarious little farms, and treated us to hot rosemary and fennel tea with gorgeous pastries made by his wife, Teresa. We heard about the history, geology and customs, visited an old corn windmill just as a local lady sprinted across the stony outcrops driving her sheep before her. It was a timeless scene that brought everything to life. There was much more - misty morning views of olive groves and cottages that gave way, as the sky cleared, to far views of the rolling hills and craggy outcrops. Lots of opportunity to see, get out and walk and simply enjoy the beauty of this fascinating part of Portugal. A first-rate tour from an excellent guide. Highly recommended!!

With an approximate duration of 3H, we will discover one of the few water points on the surface in the Lagoons of Arrimal. These support a huge number of species of plants and animals that find the ideal place to grow here. We will find abandoned windmills, the wells and cisterns show the need for humanity in the collection and preservation of a high-value resource, water. Ecopista marks the use of the old train line that used to transport coal from the Bezerra mines. We will ascend to the top of the mountain by roads that take us to places with fantastic views over the coast. If we are lucky we will see the ocean and identify the Berlengas Islands. The “Arco da Memória” marks the limit of the Coutos de Alcobaça and the beginning of the lands of the King. It is the memory of the History of Portugal here celebrated in a building of “Arco triumphal” style.

Come and visit the Monastery of Batalha, built by King Dom João I in 1386 to thank Our Lady the victory of Portugal at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385 against the powerful Spanish army. This battle marks the beginning of the Second Dynasty and opens the way to the great Maritime Discoveries of the 15th and 16th Centuries. The Monastery of Batalha is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and it took more than a hundred years to be built, spanning several reigns. In 1983 the monument was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. Travelling 130 km from Lisbon, enables us to discover the hidden natural beauties of Central Portugal. We'll visit the historic Salt Pans of Rio Maior and Serra de Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park. A typical lunch in a local restaurant on the heights is recommended. Leaving Batalha we'll visit the sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima. At Porto de Mós we'll get a sight of the city renaissance-style castle, an unique exemplar of this type in Portugal.

Henrique was our guide for a delightful day designed around our specific interests and temporarily limited mobility. We visited Estoril ( where we learned "Casablanca" was filmed), Cascais, a mountain viewpoint in the Serra da Sintra National Park with spectacular views of the coastline, Sintra itself but briefly because of the crowds, and on the way home, the Queluz Palace. Our day was all the more interesting because with his extensive knowledge of Portuguese history Henrique was able to put everything we saw into a more comprehensive context. Regrettably we don't know Portuguese so his facility with foreign languages was a vital contributor to our enjoyment. The day was also a wonderful eating experience because of Henrique's familiarity with the region, including a morning espresso and traditional pastry at Cascais and delicious lunch at at a restaurant where we are pretty sure the other guests were entirely Portuguese. Without hesitation we thoroughly recommend taking tours with Henrique!
Our farmer is mainly engaged in the production of horticultural and aromatic plants in greenhouses, supported in the innovation of a system of production called hydroponics in NFT (Nutrient Film Technique), with an area of about half a hectare. The challenge included a detailed analysis, business and market prospecting, work follow-up, dynamization of work methods and teamwork, always with the aim of sustainability, streamlining and designing the root vegetables. Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture, which is the growing of plants in a soil less medium, or an aquatic based environment. Hydroponic growing uses mineral nutrient solutions to feed the plants in water, without soil. Ready to grow without soil? Our experience will include: - Arrival to the farm and welcome by the producer - Guided tour of the farm - Sowing and harvesting experience - Offer of Hydroponics products
Inclusions: Offer of Hydroponics products

Our visit to Quinta do Sanguinhal winery was everything we asked for and more. The winery itself is well preserved, still functioning and lovely to see. The vineyards are beautiful, as are the surrounding gardens. It truly is stunning. They hold weddings in the grounds and I can tell they are really something special. Our guide was Ana. She was friendly, engaging and very knowledgeable about her family business. I really feel that we learnt a lot on the tour. Once we moved onto the tastings, Katarina joined us to help Ana with the wine tastings. The wines were all of a high standard and the guides did a great job explaining them and giving some extra history. We all really enjoyed our experience. I would not hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone.

It’s hard to believe it’s a year now since I went adventuring with Gusto Sidecar Adventures. And what adventures they were! I spent a few days exploring the region with Zayne and Rob and enjoyed every minute. We started by taking a short spin round the village with a wee off-road section for me to get the feel of travelling in a sidecar. I loved the smell of the eucalyptus in the forests - it took me back to the time I spent living in Australia. Being immersed in nature was wonderful, from the many bird calls to the potential (though I’m quite glad it didn’t happen) sightings of wild boars - Rob knows where the local wild boar likes to have his mud bath, and took me by to see his wallowing patch! Then it was off on a half-day trip with Zayne to nearby Ourem. The castle is beautiful, with great vistas of the surrounding countryside and it was fun exploring the cobbled streets. We had a fantastic lunch in the excellent Casa do Castelo and being the non-driver I was able to try a local beer. The ‘boot’ in the sidecar had plenty room for my purchases from the shop - gorgeous soaps, candles etc. and some local wine to try with dinner. The next day Zayne and I ventured further afield, to the Zazere river. It was a glorious sunny crisp clear January day. The journey there took us through several towns and villages - it was busy market day in one of them, but we managed to squeeze through and I had a pretty good view of the wares on offer from the sidecar! The roads wound up and down with spectacular views on all sides. We did stop at a few ‘scenic view’ or ‘outlook’ posts but being in the sidecar means you don’t really have to because you’re ‘in’ the view/experience as opposed to being in the bubble of a car/coach and looking out onto it. We stumbled across a local restaurant at lunchtime and after a bit of a bilingual discussion when we assured them we were more than happy to have the ‘dish of the day’, we dined on what I can only describe as a ‘feast of fish’. Just superb, and the kind of experience you would never find yourself. Off home again, with a stop at the local supermarket to fill the boot with Portuguese produce for me to take home and a few craft beers. My only regret that day - that, having brought my swimsuit, I didn’t take plunge and have a dip in the river. I’ll just have to go back! I would highly recommend Gusto Sidecar Adventures to anyone visiting or living in the region. It’s a fantastic way to get off the beaten track and explore not just areas you might not come across but in a unique way. I’m a huge fan of sidecar exploring now and can’t wait to do it again. Thanks Zayne and Rob.
