Santa María Volcano is a large active volcano at 3,772 m (12,375 ft) in the western highlands of Guatemala, in the Quetzaltenango Department near the city of Quetzaltenango. The volcano was known as Gagxanul in the local K’iche’ language, before the 16th century Spanish Conquest of the region It takes a difficult 4 hours to hike up and nearly the same time to come down . This is probably the crown-jewel of our tours in Quetzaltenango! An all-inclusive tour around the city visiting the hidden places where authentic and, above all, delicious food is prepared. First, we will walk to the 14th Avenue, where Don Richard will let you taste his amazing Tostadas, delicious fried corn tortillas with Guacamole, black beans or cheese and his natural tomato sauce. After this amazing experience, we walk to the 4th Street to meet Doña Josefina. She’s an indigenous local K’iche woman and an excellent cooker. We will drink atol de elote with her and eat some famous chuchitos with natural tomato sauce. Santiaguito volcano is the shortest and youngest one in Quetzaltenango, reaching 8250 feet (2500 m) in altitude. It is actually a side cone of the Santa Maria volcano, and rises up from the southeastern flank. This small-group morning tour will offer you some amazing views of this active volcano.
