Top 10 Tours in Nairn, Scotland

July 20, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

Thanks to its unique micro-climate, Nairn gets more hours of sunshine and less rainfall than other towns just a few miles away. Thankfully, this combination of abundant sun and no rain provide the perfect weather conditions for golf, as Nairn boasts two 18-hole championship courses. (And if you have time on your hands, there are 30 more courses within 60 miles.) Don't miss the town's jazz and film festivals, the latter of which was started by Nairn resident and actress Tilda Swinton (you'd know her if you saw her).

My husband and I had a wonderful day last week (Oct 2020) exploring the Northern Highlands from Inverness with Craig. Prior to our visit, I communicated with Craig via email to plan our day. I had a few things in mind that I wanted to see, such as the Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns and Dunrobin Castle, but mostly explained that we wanted to get a sense of the history and culture and stop and take in the beautiful landscapes and take photos. Craig delivered all that and more, exceeding our expectations, with his knowledge of the area and his delightful stories. In addition to all of the above, Craig whisked us off to a surprise visit to fascinating Wardlaw Mausoleum to learn more about the Clan Fraser (Outlander fans will understand!), Beauty Priory, Shin Falls to see the salmon leaping (yes, we did get to see actual salmon!). We had another surprise at Dunrobin Castle with a Falconry demonstration, which normally would not be operating this time of year. Many stops along the way to see beautiful vistas, Loch Fleet World Heritage site where we had a good view of the seal colony, and Clootie Well. Craig was the ultimate host, picking us up and dropping us off at our Inverness hotel, driving us in comfort, complete with safety measures of hand sanitizer and masks, and more importantly a picnic hamper full of snacks. He was very responsive and communicative before and after our trip. I highly recommend Craig as your personal tour guide to the delightful Highlands.

I loved that Jacqueline still has this tour although I was the only booking for the day- I had the whole van and her to myself! We did a whisky distillery (I paid for entry and took excellent tour/tasting here), an ancient castle tour - Jacqueline was my tour guide here with great ability to take you back in time and architecture, a great pub lunch on your own and a more “modern “ ancient castle tour that I paid for guided. A bonus on the way home was a stop to see a stone circle! I was offered fresh local items to taste in the van between stops while we were on the road- it really is a taste of Scotland! I highly recommend this trip!

We were so lucky - we had George to ourselves! As he said himself prior to picking us up from our hotel he was easily recognisable, resplendent in his kilt. First stop was Clava Cairns, an almost mystical prehistoric burial site in a beautiful setting. Then on to Culloden where we spent time wandering the battlefield, made more emotive by seeing where various Chieftans had fallen. Then on to something completely different - the Caledonian Canal at Dochgarroch Lock before heading to the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre (and yes, we did see Nessie!) Our final stop was at the ruins of Beauly Priory. As promised it was fun and full of interesting stories. Many thanks again George!

Andrew gave us the best experience on a trip out to Cawdor Castle from Inverness. He was on time, helpful with my elderly mother, kind, full of knowledge and just plain welcoming. He picked us up at our B&B in Inverness, promptly at the time arranged, told us all about the castle during our drive out there, and told us if we needed more time at the castle, to just let him know and he could adjust as needed. On the way back to Inverness, since it was my mother's first time in Scotland, he drove us by Culloden battlefield to take a look at the site as well as the hairy coos there at no extra charge, even though we were his last trip for the day and it took time out of his own personal schedule. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word and I would highly recommend him and his car services and tours to anyone who visits the area. The prices were reasonable, the service outstanding and you definitely won't be disappointed.

8. Cawdor Castle, Clava cairns and Culloden Battlefield

We will start of with a visit to a beautiful Castle, Cawdor Castle which is linked to Shakespeare's Macbeth, but home to the magical, fairy tale castle. It dates from the late 14th century, having been built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor, with the ancient medieval tower built around the legendary holly tree - wherever you look, Cawdor Castle is steeped in intrigue and history. A short drive from here will take us to the famous site of the last battle fought on British soil, Culloden Battlefield for visit and lunch. Culloden Battlefield has been restored as close as possible to how it was when battle took place in April 1746. There is a fantastic state of the art visitors centre, where we have time to take in over 250yrs of history and artifacts since the Battle. After lunch, a 5 minute drive to the Clava cairns. This is a fascinating historical place dating back to 2000BC. A Clava Cairn is a type of circular chamber tomb cairn from the Bronze Age.

9. Tour of Culloden Battlefield & Cawdor Castle

Church St, Inverness IV1 1DR, UK I.T Tours

Tours of Fort George and Clava Cairns are both highly requested of us and it’s not hard to see why! These two locations are amazing parts of Inverness’ history and provide a great opportunity to investigate both the military and cultural aspects of Highland culture. Cawdor Castle was built in the 14th century, by the Thanes of Cawdor, with the ancient medieval tower built around the legendary holly tree – wherever you look, Cawdor Castle is steeped in intrigue and history. Around 4000 years old, the series of stone cairns are all that remains of a Bronze Age cemetery, crematorium, sundial and calendar and are just above the River Nairn. An important remnant of the past of the local Scots, the Clava Cairns has become a major tourist destination in recent years thanks to the popularity of the Diana Gabaldon book series and TV show ‘Outlander’ which drew inspiration from the cairns for the ‘Craigh na Dun’ locale which sent the hero Claire Randall back in time to Jacobite Scotland!
