Gjirokastra without a doubt is one of the most beautiful city in Albania. City holds a rich history from medieval era and engaging tour guide is necessary. Lovely guide Viki and driver Raqi arranged an extremely good tour, they were very flexible and both deserve a special thanks. I truly enjoyed touring, the scenery was beautiful in Libohove, also village Labova and as cherry on top was visiting Lazarat (the village where was freely planted hashish) which was not initially planned but thanks to Viki and Raqi it was made possible. All respect for Viki who does a great job and she is a true sample of excellent tour guide.

In this tour you will have the opportunity to discover some of the magic of the city by visiting the medieval Bazaar, the highlight of the city the Argjiro Castle and also one of the best preserved houses the Zekate House. We start at Cerciz Topulli square with our local guide, continuing towards the Old Bazaar stopping at the Neck of Bazaar, where we also meet some of the artisans of the town, working with old methods, and head towards the Castle. An old castle 2.5 hectares, fulfilled with history, tragedy and legends which the local guide will explain you. You`ll be 330 meters under level of sea, enjoying breathtaking views of Gjirokastra, the typical tower houses, covered with grey stone, usually two or three floors. The last stop is the Zeakte house which was a gift by Ali Pasha Tepelena for his accountant Beqir Zeko. The aim of this tour is for you to experience the unique, magical and friendly atmosphere of Gjirokastra, not just to see the most popular tourist attractions.

Let`s stop for a moment and go Back in Time and explore the unknown part of Gjirokastra, the magic of the town that every tourist skips. Starting from “Cerciz Topulli Square” and heading to The “Old Bazaar” which is the first neighborhood outside the walls of the castle. The characteristic cobblestone and some of the oldest houses are the most beautiful elements of this neighborhood. After passing Zerzebili bridge, we reach another ancient neighborhood in called Cfake. Here we will pass some old houses which are first monument category and also a tekke belonging to the Bektashi Order. It is a beautiful combination of Nature, many sheep on top of hills, and old houses to arrive in our last destination, the “Ali Pasha Bridge”, a remaining of the aqueduct which was build more than 200 years ago to bring water to the castle. The whole trip takes 3 hours and you should be prepared to walk on a not so comfortable terrain. So put on your sneakers and join us to this back in time trip.

I went horse riding with my girlfriend and with another couple of friends and we all agreed it was an amazing day. I'd say it was my favourite experience in Albania in the 3 months we've spent here. Avenir was a great host and guide and was able to communicate effectively with us. He was always looking out for everyone and was very enthusiastic about providing us with a great experience which he fully delivered on. None of us had experience with horses but they were so docile and well behaved that we very quickly became comfortable and any initial anxiety quickly disappeared. During this day out we went on narrow and often steep tracks which was very cool, it made me feel connected with the horse and nature. You don't just ride around a flat grass area, you actually going into the mountains to visit the remote and hard to reach villages. Lastly, we were lucky enough to go during the Orthodox Easter Sunday which meant we were treated to a proper homemade banquet. The family that hosted us were very welcoming and gave a little taste of what their life and traditions are like. I'd recommend this to everyone young and old apart from small kids or people that have significant trouble walking as there is some hiking involved. The horses are quite stable and are easy to handle even for absolute beginners. I highly recommend everyone to go try this you won't regret it!

We did not pick Dorien Malaj as our guide in Albania; we were matched up by one of the travel industry’s many anonymous middle men—but the moment we actually met Dorien, we knew we had gotten lucky. He was quick to identify our particular interests and to adjust accordingly. Our focus in Albania was their “accursed mountains” in the north east. We expected that in getting from Dubrovnik to Albania, Montenegro would be little more than a “drive through”. However, Dorien took us on a stunning mountain route that included the two beautiful but very different towns of Kotor and Cetinje, which really put Montenegro on the map for us, an added bonus. Dorien was so well-informed and happy to share both the hard facts and the subtle cultural nuances we were observing. His interactions with local people were very interesting to observe, and his background in Psychology gave him an interesting perspective, greatly enhancing our experience. His personal interests were so varied and wide, and that made looking through his eyes very stimulating for us and made conversation very productive. There was no subject off limits—about either Albania or the US. Dorien has a nice sense of humor that seemed to match ours…so that we had lots of fun together, too. It was a very easy and open relationship.
