Ercolano [erkoˈlaːno] is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania of Southern Italy. It lies at the western foot of Mount Vesuvius, on the Bay of Naples, just southeast of the city of Naples. The medieval town of Resina - read Resìna - was built on the volcanic material left by the eruption of Vesuvius (79 CE) that destroyed the ancient city of Herculaneum, from which the present name is derived. Ercolano is a resort and the starting point for excursions to the excavations of Herculaneum and for the ascent of Vesuvius by bus. The town also manufactures leather goods, buttons, glass, and the wine known as Lacryma Christi (Tears of Christ).

Pretty famous at the time, as historians have preserved into their reports, the small city of Herculaneum, settled at the Volcano Vesuvius slopes, had been buried during the Vulcanic burst dated 79 A.C. Despite the centuries and the new urban settlements, 2000 years after that awful disaster you have the chance to move around the city and walk on the original stoned pavements. The private guide will show you the highlights of the Roman city while listening in details to our ancestors’ customs and traditions. Among the must see of the site, your will visit the "Palestra" (gym) and the houses whose walls are decorated with spectacular frescoes such as Casa di Nettuno e Anfritrite, Casa dello Scheletro, Casa dell'Alcova e Casa del salone nero. Skip the line and join our guides in this amazing 2.5 hours private walk into one of the most famous archaeological sites of the Campania region.

Our tour was from a cruise ship and was fabulous. Early in the day and without crowds as you would find at Pompeii. It was a resort village, populated with only a few slaves and caretakers when hit by a pyroclastic flow that covered the town to a depth of six meters, preserving it. Wonderful mosaics, frescoes and statues. Photographers will enjoy the subjects of buildings, streets, art, and houses. Do not suggest a tripod, my DSLR with a zoom lens was all I needed. Some rooms are dark, so anticipate using a high ISO. Take shots from the rim above before walking through the tunnel to be in the village. Then you will use the wide-angle a lot.

When Vesuvius erupted in 79AD; the small town of Herculaneum was destroyed and covered by layers of ash and lava. Centuries later, the archaeologists studying the area have excavated the buried town and brought back to life the domus, the Baths, the frescoes and mosaics. Your guide will lead you into the streets of the town, showing you the magnificence of the houses and the timeless beauty of the Baths, but what will leave you breathless is the condition of the wooden doors and furniture, still standing, though burned and charred by the lava. Your guide will explain to you in detail the habits of the local population, comparing Herculaneum to nearby Pompeii, whose lifestyle was completely different. At the end of the tour, your guide will be happy to provide you with additional information, suggestions and directions. We are sure you will absolutely love this tour!

My husband and I visited Pompeii with tour guide Lello (an archaeologist). We have been on a lot of tours all over the world and can honestly say Lello was the best guide we have ever had. He is very knowledgeable, attentive and (to top it off) hilarious! Pompeii itself was amazing. I would definitely recommend going with a guide to ensure you get the most out of the experience. Before the tour all communications with Giulia from the company were efficient and friendly. Lello also drove us from Naples to Positano and the van was new, spacious and comfortable. When we were hungry Lello directed us to a lovely café which offered freshly made sandwiches, coffee and other drinks.

We were referred to Lucio by another guide in Positano. It was a last minute decision to tour Pompei and Lucio was very accommodating. We LOVED every minute of our time with Lucio and would have kept throwing money at him if he would have continued talking. We all agreed that we would not have appreciated Pompei nearly as much without his expert knowledge. He is funny and engaging and his tour was a highlight of our week in Italy.

Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and this made for a very interesting visit. Standing on a viewing platform and seeing Herculaneum from that vantage point was absolutely breathtaking. Look down and you see the excavated ruins, then at eye level you take in the new town buildings, above that you see fields and in the distance there is Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that wreaked so much havoc in this area almost 2,000 years ago. A camera is a must and strong footwear is advised.

In its private residences and public buildings were found marble decorations, wall paintings, mosaic floors as well as objects implemented in the everyday life. Also called 'the sister of Pompeii', this city shows you some better preserved findings like wooden doors and exquisite paintings.
