This is a highly recommended tour from south central China. It covers the amazing red soil slopes to the north of Kunming. It is an easy 3-hour drive to the area. Expect to see the red soils of the area with the what the farmers provide with crops. Green in the early season, reds and browns as they grow and are harvested. Peak is early spring and late summer, but high summer can be good too. Guides and driver are part of the package. Guide really knew the area. Expect sunset and sunrise locations - and hope for the right conditions from nature. A great way to spend two days.

A wonderful journey along the Silk Road in Xinjiang. We did the 13-day South Xinjiang Tour from Kashgar to Urumqi. Before booking, Lesley gave us first-class advice and information about the numerous options in Xinjiang. The guide/driver was excellent and really knowledgeable about all the places we visited along the route (3,000+km). He smoothed the way with all the bureaucracy and really made the travelling enjoyable. All in all, we saw so many beautiful diverse things in Xinjiang and had a really amazing holiday. Could not have asked for more from Silk Road Travel.

8. Cangshan Mountain: Black Dragon Pools and Summit Hike (1 Day)

ChinaHiking Yunnan

This hike is only recommended for people who are thoroughly acclimatized and in excellent shape. We don't want to candy-coat it: this is a grueling hike with 2000 metres of elevation gain in a single day, but if you enjoy pushing yourself to the limits, then you'll love it! If you want to enjoy this hike without pushing your limits to the max though, we recommend doing it as a two day camping trip. For the camping trip, the hiking itinerary is the same but instead of hiking to the summit in one day, we camp at 3780 metres the first day, then continue up to the summit at 4030 metres the next morning. The main benefits of the camping trip are that you get to camp in a beautiful, high-altitude alpine meadow and rest for the night before continuing up to the summit the next morning. The other benefit is that you get to spend more time on the summit than you would if you did this hike in just one day. Another variation of the camping itinerary is to add the summit ridge traverse!

Inclusions: Private transportation, Lunch, Snacks

Exclusions: Insurance, Chinese Visa

9. Cangshan Mountain: River Gorge Hike (1 Day)

ChinaHiking Yunnan

After hiking steadily uphill for about an hour through terraced fields and tea plantations, we come to the entrance of the gorge. We continue along a small trail that traverses the side of the gorge for another 30 minutes before finally coming to the river. We soon arrive at the first of many small but majestic waterfalls with crystal clear pools that are perfect for cooling off in during summer. After hiking beside the river past a series of waterfalls for about an hour, we come to the most spectacular part of the entire gorge, a narrow channel with high cliffs nicknamed the “Cathedral”. The walls of the cliffs are smooth, undulating and completely vertical, even overhanging. Much like a typical “slot canyon”, they were worn smooth over eons by rushing water, which gives them a very interesting appearance. This is the narrowest part of the entire gorge (only a few metres wide at its narrowest point), and the cliffs are at least 30 metres high, so the view is quite stunning.

Inclusions: Private transportation, Lunch

Exclusions: Insurance, Chinese Visa
