With its plentiful beaches, dramatic mountains, and backdrop of samba and bossa nova rhythms, it's easy to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro. Made famous in song, Ipanema Beach is still the place to stroll, sunbathe, and be seen. The largest Art Deco statue in the world, Christ the Redeemer, beckons visitors to Corcovado Mountain. Rio’s annual Carnaval celebrations are bacchanalian extravaganzas of feasting, music, dance, and costumed revelry.

The 100-acre home of Brazil’s celebrated landscape designer reveals over 3,500 plant species, his collection of folk and other art, and whimsical touches throughout.
The place is beautiful! Out guide was excellent! What a Renaissance man he was. It has motivated and inspired me to be so much more creative in my own life. The tours are scheduled, and a guide is required, so check the times and plan the day.

The Casa do Pontal is the largest and most important Museum of Folk Art in Brazil. The collection contains over 8000 sculptures and models made by approximately 200 folk artists from all over Brazil. Include in the collection are works produced throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The entire collection, the building, the gardens and the exhibit itself were conceived and executed by French designer Jacques Van de Beuque, He is also responsible for amassing the collection in which he invested his own financial resources as well as fifty years of research and travel. The permanent collection contains over 8000 works representative of the different urban and rural cultures of Brazil, 5,000 of which are on display in the Museum's 1500 m2 of galleries. Organized thematically, they reflect every day activities, celebrations and festivals and the real in the fantasy lives of the people. Scattered throughout the galleries are explanatory texts in Portuguese, English and French.
Loved our time here. We had a car and it was about a 40 minute drive from Ipanema, but worth it if you can drive out. The figurines are very cool and there are a bunch of scenes that move on their own and play music. I also learned about many of the African and indigenous religions in Brazil which I really liked.

This church in the Largo de São Francisco was the site of many imperial events, including the 1822 mass dedicated to the country's conversion from colony to kingdom and the mass celebrating Brazil's adoption of its first constitution in 1831. Pope Pius X dedicated one of its chapels to the defeat of the Turks by Christian forces in the 16th century. Along with its colonial exterior and ornate interior, visitors should note sculptures done by Mestre Valentim and paintings by the slave Manoel da Cunha.

This hike was an amazing experience. It was without a doubt the most challenging hike I've ever done. But, I'm so glad I did it. The varied terrain along the way was beautiful and the views were out of this world. The vertical nature of the majority of the trail was more challenging than I anticipated and the group had to make multiple stops along the way in order for all of us to catch our breath. But, I loved the fact that there was climbing involved, including ropes and permanent cables attached to cliff faces. Not anything beyond the capabilities of most people, but, you must be in good physical condition to make this hike. Upper body strength is important on the way down as you often have to support yourself with your arms in order to lower your feet down to the next foot hold. Your legs will be jelly by the end. One of our hikers threw up several times on the way up. And another had issues with vertigo on some of the more exposed and cliff side trails at the higher elevations. But, the views from the top are incredible and a great payoff for all the hard work.
