Tunnel through time to the world of the Romans - with a visit to Welwyn Roman Baths. You can't take a hot bath any more - the boiler went out about 1,800 years ago when the Romans left! But you can see some fascinating remains which have survived from their time. Learn about how the Romans liked to relax with an elegant culture of bathing, and admire their creativity and style. The bath house remains are a scheduled ancient monument and were once part of a fine villa. The layout of the cold, warm and hot rooms and the heating system are remarkably well preserved. The baths are ingeniously preserved in a steel vault under the A1(M) motorway. You can find out how this vault was built. Also on display are archaeological finds from the Welwyn area and an exhibition devoted to the history of the site, which was uncovered during the 1960s and 70s by the Welwyn Archaeological Society. Welwyn Roman Baths are open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays and 7 Days a week during Hertfordshire School Holidays 2-5pm PLEASE NOTE WE ARE CLOSED THROUGHOUT DECEMBER.
Great hidden gem and well worth a visit if in Hertfordshire. £3.50 entry worth it as the site is very informative and gives a good description of what you are looking at (less than a pint as well). A must.

We enjoyed visiting this house where George Bernard Shaw lived with his wife Charlotte. Learnt so much in the short time we were there. Loved the gardens especially the rotating summerhouse. Will definitely return and would recommend others to visit. Would have been perfect had there been a tea shop here. Staff were well spoken , polite and very welcoming and knowledgable. So very English , delightful country setting even though he was born in Dublin.

great collection of wild cats plus a few other animals, well informed talk by knowledgeable volunteer taking you round the site that is hidden behind a farm shop. The site is looked after just by volunteers and the owner, a non profit organisation which also does fantastic work for local and overseas wildlife. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Mardley Heath is a really lovely place to take a walk. There are a number of different parking spots. If you are travelling along the B197 from Knebworth you will go through Woolmer Green and as you climb the hill towards Oaklands there is a turning on your right just before you cross the railway. Travel along this road and there are parking spots at various different locations along the road. If you continue travelling along this road it is a large crescent and will bring you back onto the B197 in Oaklands village. There are a number of different tracks to take through the woods and you can be there for a couple of hours and still not cover it. I have visited a number of times and still barely scratched the surface. It's a great place to go for a stroll but be mindful if there has been rain, it can get a little slippy!
