Before you go to Catholic Hill section of Walterboro it is important to get yourself familiar with the amazing history of this important church complex. St. James the Greater is a historically African-American church created in 1830s by Irish slave owners. For a period of time the members performed their services and had to worship without a priest till they were discovered by a traveling preacher, Father Daniel Berberich in 1897. The current "new" church was built in 1935 using leftover materials from the old church which burnt out. The complex has a former school house built for African American children and active till 1960s. Do not miss the interesting 19th century graveyard. Overall St. James the Greater Catholic Church is arguably the most important place to visit in the area at least in the eyes of historians.

This is a great little memorial park across the street from the Walterboro Airport. There are several story boards that talk about the history of the facility before being closed following the end of the war. The Air Force also had a camouflage school and POW Camp for German prisoners captured during WW II. Sad none of the original facilities were retained for historical value like the hangers and buildings on Moton FIeld in Tuskegee AL.

Stunning, hidden wonderland! Beautiful braid of boardwalk straight through the quiet, stunning black swamp. We spent 7 hours here. Myself and my teen. The board walk is lengthy, and beautiful. The trails are clean, wide and stunning. Beaver pond, duck pond, turtles, fish and more. Total walk came out to just under 7 miles. Board walk is disabled friendly. Actually passed a woman with an assistance dog, and a gentleman in a wheel chair that had no issues navigating the boardwalk. So quite and beautiful it feels like a different planet. There is a giant rocking chair at the end of one trail, that leads to a small playground and a cemetary. Loads of confederate graves and history. Well maintained. We saw no garbage. No vagrants. No loud people. Some familes with kids, but not kids with their heads down into cell phones. Kids that clearly enjoyed outdoors and nature. No nonsense at all. The few people with dogs, had them leashed, and well behaved and cleaned up after them. This is a pocket dimension. It really is like you left reality for a bit and entered this stunning, dappled realm where people are few, but all are polite and armed with a camera and a bottle of water. Just a very pleasant day. I expected to be there for about an hour. 7 hours later we headed home. And totally free! I highly recommend!
