The Museum of Friends is the first Counter Culture Museum in the United States. It is comprised of art given to each of the co-founders as gifts from fellow-artists. The first floor is accessible on Main Street and 6th and features changing exhibitions, a museum gift shop full of locally made goods "Made in Walsenburg" and workshop areas. The 2nd floor contains over 600 works of art created by contemporary artists with a few exceptions. Also on the 2nd floor is the Hawaiian Collection, Artist in Residency quarters, offices, and a resource library. The featured show on the ground level is "El Dia de los Muertos" a group exhibition that honors our ancestors. It will remain on view until December 30th. Currently, the museum is opened from noon until 4 pm, or "winter hours." . School groups are welcome as are group tours.
After attending an event there, I can say the Museum of Friends is truly a great spot to view art in Southern Colorado. An open inviting space managed by a great local couple. Definitely worth the visit!

Lathrop State Park is a great spot just outside of Walsenburg, CO. It is very conveniently located about 5 miles from I-25, and about 3 miles from downtown Walsenburg. What a nice place to stay and explore the high desert! (note to people reading reviews: DESERT. Deserts get hot in the daytime - LOL) Lathrop is large, with many campsites, trails, and two sizable lakes. The individual campsites are about 40 yards apart, there is plenty of water taps, and there are acceptable shower facilities for a quick clean-up. We saw plenty of families and groups simply enjoying the park itself, and plenty of people (like us) using the park as a great "home base" from which to explore south central Colorado. There is a golf course at the park - it should be noted that you do NOT need a day-use pass to play the course. I would be remiss to not point out the very friendly, helpful, and informative staff, including the rangers and campground hosts! Will stay here again next time we are passing through!

This is a great small town water park with two awesome slides, a current pool, a diving pool, and a walk-in pool with water toys. $7 for adults and $6 for kids or a season pass for $60 gets 20 admissions. I'm from Denver where the amazing Water World is located. While Wild Waters isn't Water World -- it is 1/5 the price and a totally awesome stop on the way to the Sand Dunes or Durango / Four Corners / Grand Canyon!

9 hole public golf course and miniature golf course. Full restaurant open 7 AM to 8 PM Tuesday through Sunday. Sandwhiches and burritos available on Mondays.
What a little gem! We recently bought a secondhand set of clubs for our sons and since we were camping at Lathrop, decided it might be fun to try golfing at Walsenburg Golf Club. I called ahead to ask whether it would be appropriate to bring first-timers there and the nice lady who answered the phone said they would be "delighted" if we'd bring our kids with us. She suggested 4 pm, so we could simply take our time. We had such a great time -- wide open fairways and few "obstacles" to frustrate first time golfers (or mediocre golfers like mom and dad). Just lovely. And affordable. And fun. The food in the clubhouse smelled great and they even had a live western band on a Saturday evening. We'll be back! Thank you for a great experience...

I am so glad we stopped here. This monument is a reminder of a somber piece of American history. The names of the men, women, and children murdered are listed and there is a timeline of events leading up to unions and the rights workers have today. There is also a notebook to sign when you visit. Please make this stop and teach your children the sacrifices made for them by others.

We are a tiny team of craftswomen with a penchant for quality brews, cocktails, and great times! Our Head Brewer, Erin, crafts sensational small batch brews right here in the shadows of the beautiful Spanish Peaks! Owner, Aubrey, creates prohibition-inspired cocktails from foraged and locally grown herbs, spices, and botanicals. Between our fresh brews, inspiring cocktails, and funky fresh mocktails there's something for everyone to enjoy! Join us for a wicked good libation and remember our Dirty Bird's motto: "Never die for the Man!"

This is a great way to explore the Spanish Peaks country. The scenery is gorgeous. If you are in a rush and just want to drive through, you can make the full drive (~80 miles) in a couple of hours. If you have time and interest, there are lots of little towns to stop and explore and you could easily spend a whole day.
