After a nice drive through the Auckland countryside we were greeted by Bob and his amazing model railway. Our 3 year old loved it and Bob was very enthusiastic providing us all with lots of information about his railway. They are open on Sundays but are happy to open up on other days if you are passing by. Very accommodating and for only $2 you can't really beat it.

The Regional Park is such a beautiful place to visit and take photos. Its a great place to swim at and has BBQ facilities and running water. It also has a camping ground down further which has cold water showers. Its also a lovely setting to have a wedding at with the Golf Club just up the road for a Wedding Ven.ue. Its gots lots of native birds and plenty of photo settings. The toilets are clean and also has an outside shower to rince off

We drove to Kariotahi beach after visiting Manakau Heads lighthouse and had wonderful time enjoying the vast expanse of black sand beach. My grandchildren 7 and 4 had a great time getting covered in sand and making black sandcastles, followed by splashing in the waves. We drove along the beach from the entrance and avoided the crowds who were camped by the safe swimming area and found a good spot to sit just by the cliffs and little waterfall. I waited at the bottom of the cliffs while the children and their parents climbed to the top. We left when the noise from racing motorbikes and quad bikes became troublesome, but had a great time during the afternoon.

Our family (including 2 young kids) really enjoyed our visit. It is a local museum run by volunteers, so doesn't have the big budget or 'bells & whistles' of your larger government funded museums; but it's full of charm and has some very fascinating pieces. The host on the day we went was friendly and shared some really interesting provenance about the pieces. I'd like to have seen a few more labels to understand the history of more of the pieces, but I understand these things take resources which can be a stretch for smaller museums.
