The Sacro Monte of Varese Unesco, is far few kilometers from the city. It consists of the Holy Road and the Sanctuary. The Holy Road with its 14 chapels, rise the mountain up to the little village of Santa Maria del Monte and it ends with the Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin. The rise is 2 kilometers along on a pebbly path, and every chapel represents one of the Mystery of Jesus’s life. Don't miss the Emporio, a Multifunctional shop where visitors can find touristic informations.
When visiting Sacro Monte di Varese, it isn't hard to see why this little village on the mountain is UNESCO world heritage. The village has a real authentic feel to it.

The most important monument founded by Branda is the Collegiate church, built on the top of the upper hill of the village, on the site of the ancient castle, which remains of the entrance portal are still visible. The church and the Baptistery are part of the Collegiate Museum. Both have been decorated by Masolino da Panicale, one of the most important painters in Florence at the time of the transition from International Gothic to Renaissance. Lorenzo di Pietro called "il Vecchietta" and Paolo Schiavo worked with him in the Collegiate apse. But Masolino left in Castiglione his masterpiece: the frescoes of the Baptistery, with their fascinating fusion of landscapes and architectures, religious history and Renaissance setting, make the chapel, painted in every centimetre, one of the best achievements of the early Italian Renaissance.

Three hours of enjoyment! The juxtaposition of truly wonderful modern art and the history of the venue combine to make this an extraordinary experience.
Our most memorably part of this visit was the time we spent in the James Turrell exhibit -- Engaging, thought provoking and delightful!
Additionally, we enjoyed an excellent light lunch at the Luce Cafe in the Villa.

There is plenty of free parking outside the factory shop, which is well sign-posted.
It's a large, well laid out, bright and spotlessly clean building and the staff are extremely helpful. Needless to say so much chocolate with up to 50% discount puts a smile on everybody's faces.
Every type of Lindt chocolate that you see in shops is available here plus some I did not know existed, well not in the UK at least. Unlike a lot of factory stores these are not seconds sold here. Every Lindt product straight from production in the adjacent factory but heavily discounted. Paradise!
Be prepared to be here ages and you will almost certainly buy more than you intended!
Worth noting: it's a great place to buy presents as they sell a good variety of pre-packaged gifts.
Not to be missed.

We went to the Osservatorio during our hike trip from Sacro Monte. The park around the Osservatorio is really nice. Unfortunately it was not open when we were there but you get a really beautiful view from the top of the mountain (360 degree view). You can see many different plants in the park which are marked with Name and so on.

This is a quite beautiful park attached to a palazzo. Varese is in general kind of off the beaten track. But if you're there, do check this out. It's reminiscent of the Boboli Gardens in Firenze, on a smaller scale. Very friendly and welcoming. Locals walking their dogs, kids playing.
