We had a great day which started with hiking one of the nearby Mountains, then walking down to the various Jigoku at ground level. Really amazing to see the bubbling-hot water come up from the ground. There are various trails that you can take, which allow you to view all of the different Jigoku. Allow a few hours to walk around at a leisurely pace.

Dependent on the weather, we had a bit of cloud but went hiking at the top. It should be warned that Japanese hiking trails do not get the same level of protection that you expect in the west so you can suddenly find yourself on a track a complete drop down one side, nothing to get hold off and a slippery slope. So you really should be prepared to turn back if the going gets tough else it's only doing to get more dangerous.

This is one of alternative from Shimabara to Kumamoto, by car it will takes 3-4 hrs.
Due to the weather with nice so we can take ferry from Shimabara Port to Kumamoto port it takes 45mins
on Ferry the most funny thing is you can feed the birds ( Sea gull ) and only in November and December
the food you can buy from port shop or ferry particular the moment when sea gull picks up the food from your hand.
Normally you can drive your car or bus(with tourist) into this ferry , very convenience for the tourist. and the Deluxe Ferry looks nice and comfortable. and nice view with Volcano.

This temple is situated a few minutes walk from the Unzen Square. There are two entrances to the temple. The first is easily accessible, as there is a flight of stairs to the left of the main square (opposite the Unzen Jinja Shrine) which lead directly to the temple. The other route, which is much more interesting, is a short walk in a westerly direction.Walk past the Unzen Bus Terminus on the right side of the road, after a five minute walk, you will see small buddhist statues and tributes on a slope to the right. Take the first right turn between two short white posts with Japanese characters. There is a storyboard at the ground level to the right, which has a few details about the temple.
Opposite this path is the part of Hell known as Seishichi Hell. To the right of Seishichi is a stone monument to Tadore, who was a famous Indian poet who visited Unzen in 1924. To the left of the path is the section of Hell known as the Kyu Hachiman Jigoku. This area of hell was not as impressive as the other side of the road. The path leads into the forest behind the temple. In this area there is a statue of a famous buddhist priest, named the Gyoki Priest monument. There are many small buddhist statues in this area. The Ryuzu Tomb is another famous monument, but not easily located. It is on a mound opposite the many seated buddhas on pedestals. To access the tomb area, walk to the rear of the mound, and look for a small path that leads to an electricity pole. The tomb is to the right of the pole, and is partly covered with weeds. The tomb marker is an ancient concrete "crown" shaped structure. Finding this tomb, took quite a few minutes, so don't give up too easily.
If you follow the path into the forrest, which slopes slightly upward at first, then leads downward, you will see many different buddha images on either side of the path. In this forest, it is quite peaceful, and you can rest and meditate. There are great photo ops with all the buddhist figures which are weathered and seem ancient. Walking back up the path to the seated buddhas, take the path to the right and you will see the temple after a few minutes walk. The temple is over 1,300 years old, and used to be the main attraction in Unzen, as it was a major temple on the pilgrimage route in ancient times.
There is a beautiful bell tower, and many buddhist statues around the temple area. The temple was not open at the time of our visit, so we missed seeing the main attraction, the 5 meter high, gold plated buddha and Shaka Shrine. A short wallk down the steps, and you will be back in the main square. Other attractions nearby include the Ueki Mototaro Monument (to the right of the stairs) and the Unzen Jinja Shrine (opposite the square). The main attraction of course is Hell, which may be entered by walking on the path to the right of the Shrine.
