Texas Prison Museum

Learn about the Texas prison system including an exhibit of the electric chair dubbed "Old Sparky".

Reviewed By mpgallagher2007 - Bellaire, Texas

This is different museum that is devoted to the history of incarceration in Texas – the good and the bad. There are interesting exhibits of weapons commandeered from the prisoners, the Old Sparky electric chair, and a replica of an actual modern prison cell. Be sure to look at the leatherworks and other items crafted by the prisoners available for sale. All-in-all, we spent about an hour here.

Sam Houston National Forest

Reviewed By Matthew B - Houston, Texas

Visitor station was closed on the weekend, no available bathrooms, trail maps not labeled to tell you where you are, no labels to nearest available walking trails, the "walking trail" was heavily undeveloped that has seen little use. I was picking ticks off my legs even after using DEET. Bottom line: don't bother.

Davy Crockett National Forest

Reviewed By WorkToTravel_12 - Saskatoon, Canada

Looked like Canada. Lots of pines and shade. There was day camping across the water with several families, who went home after supper. Lots of birds and squirrels. No mosquitoes. Good tenting area. Free hot showers and bathrooms. Very reasonably priced. Very quiet. Campsites were well spread out.

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area

Reviewed By PineywoodsBirder - Lufkin, Texas

Camped in Dogwood Circle (Site #34, with the water hookup a tad farther than I would have liked). Spacious, forested sites with a good mix of pines & hardwoods. Decent birding around the loop & even better on the nearby trails. The bathroom facility offers flush toilets & hot water showers, in four private, lockable unisex rooms. During our stay they were maintained to almost spotless perfection.

Fort Boggy State Park

Reviewed By Adam C

My wife and I stayed in the new cabins in the park. They are very nice with a few modern amenities to include a bed, microwave, and a coffee maker. Yet, it still has a fire pit and enough woods around to still feel like you are camping in the forest. The screened in porch and the deck got a lot of use every day. The lake is beautiful and It is a great place to swim. The only negative is that there are no private showers to bathe in the park.

Sam Houston Statue

Reviewed By Bailale d - Texas

This is a great place to visit but the museum is under remodeling so it's probably best to wait until the construction is done. The highway department is also changing the exit which would be an additional reason to wait till later. The statue itself is awesome and great for photos so if you don't mind all the construction it is still a wonderful place to visit.
