Museo Arocena

Reviewed By RaphaelTobias - Herefordshire, United Kingdom

I visited friends at Torreon in October/November 2017. I had not expected to find the museums and theatres, which are truly centres with a high standard of culture both in art and music as well as in history and archeology. The Museo Arocena is a modern, purpose-built museum with something for everyone: a fine collection of paintings and all the history and geography you would want to know about Torreon and Mexico in general. When I visited there was also an exhibition of photographs of 21st Century Mexican enclosed nuns, quite breathtaking. I would highly recommend a visit.

Casa del Cerro Museum

The Casa del Cerro is a German-style castle, built by the engineer and architect Federico Wulff Olivarri, who arrived at the then Villa de Torreón invited to work by the entrepreneur Andrés Eppen, who commissioned him to carry out the streets of the f Utura city. Determined to establish his residence, he bought the grounds of a steep hill in front of the railway station, this in order to build a house for his family of seven. For the facade was used quarry brought from Durango, while for the interior pine wood and Italian mosaics were used. The house was completed in 1905 and since 1994 houses the Historical Museum, living witness to the birth and development of the city of Torreón.
