We took a cruise on the lake on a rainy windswept day and managed to sight several bison, deer, egrets and cormorants on well run and life raft equipped passenger ferry boats. Well worth the time and the money. Sitting on the side seats makes photography easier

Elephant Safari was way too amazing sitting on the back of elephants and walking through the narrow lanes of coconut trees. Very beautiful experience, love the way how elephant in Kerala understand Malyalam. They only follow voice commands, there is no need of a stick to make them follow discipline. We also experienced elephant bathing where the elephant would gather mouthful of water in his trunk and on the voice command would throw that water on his back where he/she is sitting. it was soo much fun.. We also fed the eleohants with bananas and the elphant would gulp it down his throat. My ???? name was Sita and the one we bathed was Bhadra. Both were very cute.

periyar cultural centre Anavachal Road, Thekkady every evening programs at 6pm kalarippayattu and 5pm and 7PM Kathakali
The traditional fight style kalaari is a must watch show when you are in Kerala. And this place offers one of the best performances of the artform. Youngsters performing a traditional art that inspired most of the martial fighting forms around the world was most satisfying moment of the trip. Your Thekkady visit is not complete without attending this performance.

My wife and I stayed at Thekkady, Idukki from 7th Nov 2018 to 12th Nov 2018. We stayed at The Treetop Resort, which is 500 meters away from Periyar Tiger Reserve entrance. The resort is amazing and you can check my review of The Treetop Resort. Usually people prefer to stay for 1 or 2 days at Thekkady. Thekkady is part of Munnar – Thekkady – Alleppey triangle tour. If you plan to directly go to Thekkady, Cochin airport is the closest airport and it takes 5 hours to reach Thekkady. You can book AC cab at airport for INR 5,000. Though the route is scenic and passes through forest, you won’t see any wild life on your way to Thekkady. According to forest guides, the best season to visit Periyar Tiger Reserve is Nov – May. It wasn’t crowded at all during our visit as we visited during Diwali vacation. Following are the various ecotourism activities conducted at Periyar Tiger Reserve (Check pictures for more details). I am not sure if the activities can be booked online. I highly recommend to book the activities in advance, as they have limited slots. Note: • Rates and timing as of Nov 2018. Children below 12 years are not allowed in any trekking activities • No vehicles are allowed inside the park, all the activities are either walking or boating • You’ll spot lot of local guides offering Jeep safaris, but the safaris are on the outskirts and periphery of the forest • Tiger reserve entry fee has to be paid over and above any activity charge • Don’t expect to spot a tiger or leopard during any of the activities. You can see Bisons, Elephants, Sambar, Wild Boar, Black Monkeys, Giant Squirrels etc. Boating. Ecotourism activities - Nature Walk, Green Walk, Jungle Scout, Bamboo Rafting, Border Hiking, Tiger Trail, Bamboo Groove, Pugmark Trail, Jungle Camp, Jungle Inn, Tribal Dance Contact detail: Phone - +914869224571, +918547603066 Ticket Booking - Kerala Forest Tourism Information Centre (Search on Google Maps) Boating ticket/Bus stand/Entrance ticket address - National Park Ticket Office (Search on Google Maps) Boat landing (Most of the activities start at this point, you can buy bus ticket from bus stand) During our stay at Thekkady we did 1) Pugmark trail – You can check my review at https://www.tripadvisor.in/ShowUserReviews-g297636-d1751438-r635734253-Periyar_Tiger_Reserve-Thekkady_Idukki_District_Kerala.html 2) Bamboo rafting (full day) – You can check review at https://www.tripadvisor.in/ShowUserReviews-g297636-d10532079-r635735843-Bamboo_Rafting_at_Periyar_Wildlife_Sanctuary-Thekkady_Idukki_District_Kerala.html 3) Ayurvedic Massage – Shirodhara at Pranamaya 4) Spice and souvenir shopping at local market Why go to Thekkady/Periyar Tiger Reserve – Relaxation, hike and rafting through dense forest. Don’t go if your sole aim is to spot wild life.

Gavi is part of periyar tiger Reserve. And this is a full day trip, which has boating, waterfall, cardamom plantation, sabarimala view, museum. Forest provides the breakfast and lunch. It's a beautiful place to explore.

We opted for the half-day bamboo rafting as it comprises both rafting and trekking. There is more chance of seeing animals on the full day trip but it is very expensive. The cost for two of us for the half-day trip was Rs3600 + Rs1000 entry fee. This is quite expensive but it was worth it. We were the only ones booked on it for that day so it was just us and three guides, who were very friendly and knowledgeable. We set off at 9.30am, trekked through the spectacular forest to the lake, where we stopped for a simple but tasty lunch (provided), and then spent an hour on the water. After this we trekked back, arriving back at 2.30pm. Do not go expecting to see elephants and tigers. This is very hit or miss. If you enjoy walking through spectacular forest surrounded by birds, butterflies, etc you will not be disappointed. It is stunning. Seeing large mammals is a bonus. We didn't see any elephants (just poo!) but thoroughly enjoyed the day and would highly recommend it.

The Periyar Tiger Trail is a protection-oriented trekking programme. The trek route passes through hills and valleys.
The Periyar Tiger Reserve is a very interesting place to visit, the boat ride of an hour and half gives you a full view of the terrain and also a lucky chance to see wild animals and a few birds. There is a State Transport bus which ferrys passengers to the reserve for the boat ride, the ticket charges of both are separate and very nominal. The tickets can be booked online too,but well in advance as there are limited seats. It would be best to take the early morning ride at 7.30 as there are chances of the wild animals venture out for a drink at the lake. We could spot a herd of bisons and a variety of birds on our trip. The arrangement for boarding and ticketing were well organised. The need to fill up a form, for the tickets, with personal information was unnecessary according to me. Overall a wonderful boat ride on the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
