with a spare hour before catching the train back to Nice, we explored the town. It was wonderful to stroll around the lanes and stairways of the old town, and take in the views of the towering mountains around us. We found a old church, no-one in it at all, and explored inside. Hardly another tourist in the town-what a change from Nice and Monaco!

This museum opens up the history and geography of the region, explaining the significance of the nearby rock carvings and settlement over the last 5000 years. Extensive captions are provided in French, with only a few in English/Italian (for the dioramas). I’m still trying to decide if you should visit the museum BEFORE you hike into the Vallée des Merveilles or AFTER. On the one hand, having background knowledge of the region would be useful when you’re exploring the rock carvings. On the other, having visited the rock carvings, it’s good to consolidate your understanding. Regardless, I recommend the museum.
