When It's Dark, I See the Lights! My biggest passion is the Northern Lights and Night Sky photography, the reason why many friends started calling me Aurora Dora. For many years the darkness of the Alaskan winter nights gave me winter blues, but everything changed when I started shooting night images. Nowadays Auroras, Northern Lights, are my life. From long and cold nights photographing amazing auroras through the skies, and teaching northern lights photography workshops, to the summers explaining and showing the auroras to the ones that are not able to visit Alaska in the winters. I am a photographer in Alaska, living the dream life of many photographers.
Discovered this little gem while exploring the town of Talkeetna, Alaska. Dora captures the Northern Lights beautifully in her photographs that it's the next best thing to actually seeing it live. Would have purchased if we were lucky enough to see it live but unfortunately we didn't but we will be getting one of hers when we do. Highly recommend you to check it out.

Interesting place where all Denali hikers must come through. They have a movie about the Denali climbing experience which is about 15 minutes, and very much worth seeing. Nice bathrooms open to public too. It's on the edge of town / Village and well worth the walk over to stroll around inside. There is no charge.

Well worth the $5 contribution. This little complex of buildings including a 1936 schoolhouse, houses a good collection of local artifacts. Items from the areas mining and trapping past are included. In the old section house they have an interesting video and memorabilia and information on Mt Denali. The museum also gives an introduction to some colourful local heroes from the past, including Don Sheldon, Bradford Washburn and Ray Genet.

There's a $5/car parking fee if you drive yourself. Not attended - put the fee in an envelope and the receipt on your car. There wasn't a clear sign for where to park if you were hiking so we went too far and had to backtrack through the campground which had a very rutted gravel road. Only pit toilets available, but they were clean and well-maintained. We did the loop hike around the lake. A little over 5.5 miles. Really a beautiful hike, much of it next to the lake. Lots of tree roots, though, so we had to watch our step. From the east side of the lake we had beautiful views of Denali, since it was a clear day. Lots of wild flowers, too. Mostly flat, though there were a couple of hills.

This was a fun stop with kids who don't know where maple - or in this case birch - syrup comes from, how it is processed, and the different tastes the same product can have. There is a short film and discussion of the process before a tasting. Regrettable, all the syrup I bought was later stolen while we were in Anchorage.

It was suggested to us before we took the 6 hour train ride to purchase wine & snacks. The young man behind the counter had a HUGE attitude acted like he was doing us a favor ringing up our purchase. Everything here is way over priced $7.00 for a bag of chips by before you get to Talkeetna

We hadn't booked but they managed to find us a table quickly, on an already busy evening.
No real problems, very quickly served and a good fish and chips. In fact so quickly served that I'm slightly suspicious that everything is pre-cooked, but it still tasted good.

After wandering through most of the typical touristy shops in small Talkeetna, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the merchandise in the Dancing Leaf. This shop is definitely a cut above the others, offering many beautiful items by local artists. The staff is friendly and helpful and it is easy to ship your purchases home at a reasonable cost. I bought some handmade, artist-signed, art glass coasters in a beautiful wood box and they shipped them for only $15 by USPS priority mail.

From the end of Main Street at Riverfront Park, keep walking towards the river. There was a small market with vendors selling food and tourist items. The view when reaching the river was pretty but Mt Denali was not visible that day. There are some pretty branching trails and we walked along them for a short distance.
