Caversham Wildlife Park

Reviewed By bcripps1 - Cheltenham, United Kingdom

My wife and I visited Caversham as part of a day tour around the Perth area. As it was an organised tour, we experienced several supervised encounters as part of our visit. Perhaps the best was the time spent in the large kangaroo enclosure, with a a great number of very friendly and relaxed kangaroos, who we were able to feed. Our visit also included other animal encounters, including koalas and a farming presentation. Caversham is a beautiful, spacious, well laid out and maintained park with well cared for animals in spacious, natural enclosures. We only had about two hours here, but could easily have spent at least half a day to thoroughly explore and enjoy this beautiful park. Don't rush your visit - allow plenty of time!

Ugly Duckling Wines

A charming, rustic cottage overlooking the vines is home to our small boutique vineyard and cellar door. Premium wines, all locally grown and crafted, coupled with old-fashioned service and a friendly smile is what you’ll find at our popular spot that welcomes dogs in the outdoor dining area. Enjoy a delicious platter of wine-friendly fare, or choose from the range of gourmet pies (some made with Ugly Duckling wines), while you relax and soak up the fantastic views across the Swan Valley to the Perth hills. Guests charmed by the food and wine can grab a souvenir including Ugly Duckling Wines cheese boards and glasses, olives, and wine produced from the vineyard. We also have live music here every Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Part of wine tour and a surprising little winery with a nice selection of wines. Beautiful grounds and stunning views of the hills. Support a local wine producer and go and sample their wines. I'd recommend their Bubbly Duck a perfect summer wine.

Windy Creek Estate

Windy Creek Estate, formally Cobanov Wines, was first established in 1937 by Ante Cobanov. He had left Croatia in 1924 and spent 13 years cutting sleepers in the south-west to enable him to put a deposit on this Swan Valley property. In 1937 he bought the fertile coastal plain land that is still the core of the family business and sent for his wife and sons. They grew grapes for dried fruit production but made a small amountof wine for the Perth immigrant community. The family has continued to produce wines for 80 years and we have been selling fruit to other wineries for approximately 40 years. The Windy Creek Estate label was first released in 1980. Tony Cobanov, the current winemaker, entered the industry as a third generation winemaker and is very passionate about the Swan Valley and its lifestyle. He has 3 sons Joshua, Callum and Rohan so it is a distinct possibility that this will become a 4th generation business and he can’t think of anything better than that.

Small independent winery we visited as part of an organised wine tour. A vey good selection of wines to taste including Vedelho, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin in the white corner and Grenache, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz in the red corner. The winery also produces fortified wines. Friendly unhurried wine tasting. Note the wines are only available at the winery but all seemed to be very good value.

Walyunga National Park

These 1800-hectare national parklands are set in the Avon Valley. The Swan River becomes a thrashing white-water stream as it runs through the park, making it a favored location for canoeing and rafting. The park's walking trails are shaded by Wundoo, Jarrah and Flooded Gum trees, and kangaroos and bird life flourish. Wildflowers are spectacular in spring and in winter the rugged scenery is captivating. The park provides numerous picnic and barbecue areas.

This bushwalking season, our group had been hiking in different trails within an hour's drive from Perth every week. Buying an annual park pass was the only option for us, instead of a day pass, especially since we were both RAC members and held a Concession Card. We parked our cars in the Boongarup Pool Car Park. We chose the longest hiking trail, the 11-km Echidna Trail, a Grade 3 Difficulty walk, best taken in anti clockwise direction. The trail starts close to where the Wooroloo and Avon rivers meet to become the Swan. It's very picturesque in the first 30 minutes, and involved a tiring ascend, but the rest of the 3.5 hours taken to walk the 11-km Echidna Trail, was on a broad 4WD track, and stony in most parts. Highlights were the blooming wild flowers including the beautiful fringe lily, trigger plants and some myrtle species. Definitely recommended!

Perth's Outback Splash

Since 1981, Perth’s Outback Splash (previously ‘Outback Splash at The Maze’) has been providing outdoor entertainment attractions for Perth families and visitors to Western Australia. Situated in Bullsbrook, just over 30 minutes from Perth’s CBD, the park is a must-visit destination. In addition to waterslides and other seasonal, water-based attractions (open September to April), it offers year-round family fun including mini golf, mazes, sensory play activities, children’s playground, Australian animal experiences and onsite food and beverage outlets. An expansive lawn area is ideal for picnics and onsite food and beverage outlets, the Burger Bar and Snack Shack, serve fresh meals and locally-roasted Yahava coffee. As well the place to go for a full day out with family or friends,Perth’s Outback Splash is a popular location for Christmas parties, birthday celebrations, school excursions and get-togethers with friends.

If on holiday in Perth with children or teens this is a must visit place. We all had fun. The new slides are incredible, long and fast. The 14 year olds had as much fun as the 7 year olds and 40+ things!
