Eighty-two-mile scenic byway offering the best foliage in the state.
We did the McKenzie Pass route out of Sisters on our way to Florence. Though the smoke from wildfires was evident, the view of the Three Sisters was still amazing. Our first stop was the Dee Wright Observatory that offered a panoramic of the Cascades and the lava field. There is an a path into the lava field with many informational signs that should not be passed up. Continuing on we enjoyed the view from Belknap Viewpoint. The last stop before we exited the loop was Proxy Falls where we hike a part of the trail, but my knees started to give out so we never reached the falls.

I had the pleasure to visit these 2 falls during a weekend visit to the area. The walk is short. Only about 2 miles but the 2 waterfalls were great. The river runs right by the path so you can get up close and personal. Great pictures as well. It is also a free parking area. A must if your in the area. Just be aware there is no cell service there.

Some many places to visit, breweries, restaurants, shops, shops, shops!!! There was something for all of us to enjoy (5-75 year olds on our trip).

The trail is less crowded (also more rustic, and longer) than the trail at Koosah/Shallie Falls. Loved the thousands of butterflies fluttering around in the sunny mist. My Keen water shoes were perfect for the rough terrain and allowed me to slosh through the freezing cold water as well (optional). From what I have heard the amount of water varies, so the falls can be more and less spectacular depending on when you go.

This is the source of the McKenzie River and offers hiking worth exploring.
This lake is one of the clearest waters in all of Oregon. Not visited by a lot of people during the week, so generally quiet and serene - a perfect place for kayaking. Very cold water, so not ideal for a swim unless you're a polar bear type.

Quite dusty, but other than that a good riding experience. Nicely maintained trail system that offers flowing single track to the more challenging rock gardens. Numerous connector trails offers you a large variety to "mix and match" your riding experience.
The ride we chose was the PRT West and PRT East Loop. Plenty of variety for most all riding abilities. Make sure you pick up a map, it will make for a more enjoyable riding experience.

Winter retreat features more than 15 kilometers of Nordic trails, with a vertical drop of 1,035 feet and top elevation at 5,703 feet.
We came here not to ski or snowboard, but to sled. They have a little recreational area for younger kids that cost just $5 a piece and honestly no one was around you probably could just go and play for free. My 4 and 6...MoreThanks so much for coming to Hoodoo! I'm so glad you had a good time and enjoyed your time in the lodge and on the sledding hill. I hope you'll come back soon. Thanks again!

This is a steep climb, not for the out of shape. The trail zig zags through a forest, crosses some open areas and comes out on top of the rim.
The Views are incredible!
First you go past the rim itself, geology here is very interesting. (I'm not a geologist, so I can't truly describe it). You look down on Three Creeks Lake, which is heart shaped, and a good place for primitive camping and kayaking.
From the top of the hike, there are impressive views of Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top and South Sister.
It is possible to hike over to Broken Top, we weren't in good enough shape, nor did we allow enough time. It might be a multiday backpacking trip. Never done it, don't know much about that.
There is NO dog water, bring plenty for yourselves and your furry companions. Forest Service fee for parking. Plan ahead, get your passs early, there were rangers there the day that we hiked.

We went to Three Creeks Lake the last time we were at Black Butte Ranch, and vowed never again! When we parked in the lot, the mosquitoes were swarming all over! Millions of them!! We rushed out of the car and found that they decreased a LOT as we left the parking area, but they were waiting for us when we returned from a disappointing hike around the area which sadly, wasn't nearly as nice as mentioned in our hiking book, but I'm sure the mosquitoes had something to do with it! They even got into the car as we tried to quickly get in and slam the doors shut, and we were swatting at them on the whole way home! Nope, never again!!

This is a great place to pick up fresh berries & produce for the weekend. I'm always impressed with the selection. Last week we had the most amazing boysenberries - holy cow when was the last time you tasted fresh Oregon boysenberries! And marionberries - we bought a bunch and took them home and put them in the freezer to make smoothies. They had sweet white corn and awesome watermelons. It's a great spot for locals & tourists alike!
