Top 10 Things to do in Shinagawa / Gotanda, Kanto

December 15, 2021 Misti Hsu

Tradition collides with pop culture in Tokyo, where you can reverently wander ancient temples before rocking out at a karaoke bar. Wake up before the sun to catch the lively fish auction at the Tsukiji Market, then refresh with a walk beneath the cherry blossom trees that line the Sumida River. Spend some time in the beautiful East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then brush up on your Japanese history at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Don’t forget to eat as much sushi, udon noodles, and wagashi (Japanese sweets) as your belly can handle.

Sengaku-ji Temple

This temple is a little our of the way and doesnt seem to be as visited as some of the other attractions we visited. We werent able to go in to the temple itself (not sure if we were just unlucky or if its one of the many that dont allow access). The site is very interesting and covers the history of the 47 ronin (yes - the Keanu Reeves film is based on this story!). The site is well preserved - worth a visit if you're in the area. We spent a couple of hours in the area - but a lot of that time was spent sitting!

This is a great garden which is part of a hotel property and has all the traditional Japanese Garden features we were expecting from the little temple, a chapel where several couples were getting married, nice walkways, koi fish, sitting areas, a mini bamboo forest and lots of beautiful flowers and trees including bonsai trees. We would definitely recommend stopping to see this. It is near several other attractions if you are just wondering around so be on the lookout for it while walking around and using the pocket Wi-Fi that is highly recommended by all to help get around.

Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum

Reviewed By hfot2 - Vermont, United States

While many come here to visit the Art Museum, we come to stroll in the Japanese garden. You can pay a garden-only entrance fee which is quite minimal, and even smaller for seniors. Along with the Japanese strolling garden, the grounds include a European garden, several large statues and sculpture installations on a broad open lawn area often populated by kiddie playgroups (and children happily climbing on the abstract sculptures), family gatherings, young couples, seniors, and, of course, the Art Museum itself. The small Japanese garden, tucked into the far reaches of the grounds, is well worth your time. We found that late morning visits provided better light than later in the afternoon. We have been several times at different times of day. The autumn foliage never disappoints. This is a popular place and it often has many tourists. If you want to take photos without people - as we do - you will find yourself waiting a long time before you can get your desired shot. The circuit around the koi pond offered many different views, some including borrowed scenery. At the top of a small hill is a lovely tea house. Two women (volunteers?) invited us to take our shoes off to photograph the space. They also gave us a pamphlet in English about the tea house. They seemed most pleased that we showed such interest in the building. Be aware that there are uneven steps up to and down from the tea house. After making a second circuit around the pond and photoing the garden from every angle we finally decided it was time to depart. Visitors tips: This is a perfect place to visit before or after a walk through the very close Nature Institute. Happo-en garden can be visited on the same (very full) day as well. Ask about a senior, over 65, discount for entrance - be prepared to show you passport to prove your age. Even if you don’t visit the Art Museum, you can visit BLANC, one of two shops for the Museum, located just outside the entrance to the grounds. Lots of interesting items for sale here.

Nikon Museum

The museum is situated in the Intercity Tower C. It's very close to Shinagawa Station and took about 8 minutes walk along the walkway connecting the station and the building. Entry is free. Staff were very friendly and helpful. English speaking too. The museum had a special exhibition on railway and quite a number of videos displayed showing images and clips took by various cameras. The history of the brand was documented. Any Nikon fans or photography enthusiasts should find it interesting. It's worth visiting.

On 17 MARCH 2021 , i went to the star wars identities with my friend . we had a blast as we both are fans of star wars . We screamed like hell when we went into the exhibition . What i loved about the exhibition was that i was able to see some of my favorite character but my most favorite character that is not there is Kylo Ren . I prefer him to darth vader as he is evil while kylo ren became good in the end . I loved star wars since 2018 as i have watched all of their shows in 2 years from 2018 and 2019 . i wish that i was in the show being famous and popular . I hop that i can go there again with my friend and to have a blast there . I hope star wars has a new movie so that i can watch it with my friend .

Institute of Nature Study

It is a nobel that this land has not been developed and has been left to nature. The paths were dirt and gave me a feeling of being one with nature. It was not a manicured park. But, it was clearly tended to. It is worth the time to check out the small entrance museum. It will educate you and what is found and studied in the park. I particularly liked the interactive bird exhibit which showed and played the call of the birds found in the Institute. However, all of the museum is japanese only, including the books for sale. While walking I spotted a black kite soaring above the entrance to the trails and heard it's noisy call later when it landed in one of the old tall pines. Great park for birding.
