This is a beautiful church in the historic center of São Luis. The altar is decorated in gold leaf, done in the baroque style. It is close to the Governor’s mansion (also known as Palácio dos Leões, which is also definitely worth a visit); you really don’t need more than 10 minutes to see the inside & take a few photos, so if you are anywhere nearby, it’s worth your time.

Lovely old historic centre in dire need of some TLC. Old squares, decorations, music all put on by the municipality shows that they’re trying but many dilapidated buildings and homeless people asking for handouts don’t let you forget where you are. That said, food & drink is inexpensive and local folks quite friendly. Sunday market in the main square by the cathedral definitely a highlight with local food, drink and handicrafts accompanied by a local capoeira group doing their thing made it a memorable experience.
