Levada Caldeirao do Inferno

Reviewed By CaptChaos179 - Winchester, United Kingdom

We planned to do this as an extension of the Caldeira Verde. They final waterfall although not as full and flowing as Verde has it owns charm and their are many delights along the way. It is around 2.5 hours extra on top of the Verde taking photos and a brief lunch stop. The Levada walk has been greatly improved over last year or so, it is there fore not as dangerous as some would have you believe. It does have quite a hard climb half way along (when you get to the railway tracks it is over) One of our group got vertigo on the next bit - the usual drop to the side but still the safety wires but the Levada briefly widens significantly here perhaps making them feel more exposed. If anyone does not want to continue they can admire the views and wait for you to return on the way back. There are many tunnels (but not lower than Verde but wetter and more uneven. The second of the bridges by the two waterfalls in crag between the has dodgy metal planks so you may want to straddle the beams as the planks move a lot, make sounds but didn't give way. You hear these feeder waterfalls from the beginning of a long tunnel building the expectation. The final climb to Inferno is a little rocky but pleasant and you reach your destination. All you have to do is return by the same route. The views and experi noes are even better than the Verde and thinking about men hanging from ropes from the top of the mountain to hack out the Levadas by hand will have you in awe and respect. A bucket list walk

Truly beautiful walk. From the car park to the end and back, including a sit down for our sandwiches it took about 4 hours. It’s a beautiful walk (with some slightly scarier parts). A torch will be needed. I wouldn’t say a guide is necessary.

Reserva Natural da Rocha do Navio

We visited in with ter but on a lovely sunny day. From the top there are great views along g the coast. We decided to walk down - this was fine to do - slightly slippery in places and would be tricky on a wet day but perfect ok. There were great views of the coastline and waterfalls on the way down. At the bottom it was great to watch the rollers coming in from the Atlantic. We then took the cable car back up to the top for €3 each. This was a great place to visit with spectacular views even for Madeira. This was ideal as part of a walk around the Santana area and readily accessible by bus from Funchal.

You go uphill from Santana for 4 kms and arrive at a large parking place. Next to it is a lovely house where you can zip a coffee and enjoy the nature, flowers and sounds of the birds. It is also the starting point of different walks of different degrees of difficulty, but all rather flat.

Levada do Furado

We took the 8.10 am Santana bus from Funchal and went up into the heights past all the houses and into moor countryside. The bus windscreen wipers were wiping off the wet from the windscreen .We got off in Ribiero in a rain and put on our waterproof jackets .We saw the sign PORTELA and crossed the road and down the path immediately into another world of Laurel and moss and a good path to follow along the levada . We walked on and the cloud was hanging over the mountains but we had clear visibility on our walk .We passed cliff sides dripping in water and with very old type mosses and fern forming green wallpapers .Very beautiful . The cloud lifted and we could see across to the other tree covered hills and beyond to the ocean. We were glad there was a perimeter fence as it was quite narrow in places and the fence just gave confidence . We only met maybe 10 people coming the other way . I’m glad we did this levada walk but I wouldn’t want to do a higher one .The walk took us 5 hours .We eventually came out in Portela where we had an hour or so to wait until a bus to take us to Funchal .There were several taxis waiting hoping but we waited on the bus and it was on time .There were a couple of eating places in Portela .

Casas Tipicas de Santana

Reviewed By klaryze - Milan, Italy

Our guide brought us to see the typical houses of Santana, they are cute, small & colorful houses. Aside from the touristy houses, there’s also this one typical house where a certain Mr.Manuel still lives in (no entrance fee, just offer + he let you try some biscuits & a shot of rum i think), it’s the authentic typical house located few minutes from where tourists usually go to take photos. Better if you can visit his home & see how this typical houses looked like in the past.
