Top 10 Things to do in Sanibel Island, United States

April 10, 2018 Harland Bartelt

Most vacation spots are either relaxing (Tahiti) or family-friendly (Orlando). Sanibel Island, however, is that rare place which is both. Spend a quiet afternoon shell-collecting, or find a hotel with a kids' program so you can enjoy a trip to the spa or a round of golf.

Sanibel Public Library

Sanibel Public Library is undergoing "Your Library Reimagined" project. Both the beauty and the quality of the Library structure are outstanding, but it is time to replace much of the infrastructure. HVAC, fire suppression, plumbing, lighting, technology, and flooring are being upgraded for greater efficiency; sustainable design features are included with the upgrade. All Library services (like the shell exhibit, for example) may not be available at all times during the 2017 remodel. Updates to the project will be posted on Facebook and Twitter. Please call the Library before your visit if you have questions. The Library provides access to high speed WiFi, as well as printing services—no Library card required. If you do not live in Lee County Florida, you may purchase a Visitor Card for $10, good for one year. Use the Visitor Card to check out books, movies, cooking kits, museum passes, music, magazines, and more—up to 30 items at one time. Also use your Visitor Card to download eBooks, magazines and audiobooks, and stream movies and music through the Library's eShelf collection. Sanibel Public Library hosts programs for kids of all ages throughout the year including storytimes, makerspace events, and special guests. Events are listed at the Library's online calendar.

Used to be a lot of farm fresh fruit and vegetable stands here but that has dwindled to where it is a lot of non farm related products so it has become more like a foodie flea market. I used to go fairly regular but now I no longer go much as the produce at Publix and Costco is actually more farm fresh.......need to change the name to market as Farmers not around this market!

Sanibel Historical Museum and Village

A delightful village museum that recounts the island's history through photographs, exhibits and live presentations.

History lovers will enjoy this. It is a collection of the original homes and buildings from the pioneer families of Bailey and Matthews, plus. It is a $10.00 fee, and you start with a 13 minute video, which was filmed here, interviewing Sam Bailey. He has great information and memories of his childhood on Sanibel. They have the original Post Office, the first schoolhouse, the kit home from the Sears catalog, the original tearoom, the Bailey General Store, a garage housing an old Ford pick-up/Baileys delivery truck. The buildings have a "press here" button that starts a recording providing information about the building you are in. It is quaint, clean, and a fun experience. Also a small gift shop. Good for adults and children.

Established in 1945, this wildlife refuge occupies one-third of Sanibel Island and is a prime spot for birdwatching. Fees are required for Wildlife Drive. Wildlife Drive is closed on Fridays. There's an extensive and informative FREE visitor center, a fantastic wildlife drive, tram tours, kayaking, fishing opportunities, picnic benches, and even a free scavenger hunt style game and wildlife spotting app (Discover Ding) if you prefer a self-guided tour.

Bowman's Beach

Reviewed By Andrew H - Suwanee, Georgia

We tried a couple area beaches and found Bowman's to be the best. First, there is plenty of parking and nice facilities (clean restrooms, showers to get the sand off, even a changing area). While it is a bit of a walk from parking to the beach, we found the beach it self to be wide, clean and not crowded at all. We especially loved the shelling at this beach. We walked quite a way down the beach to get to an area where a little sand shelf had formed and found a ton of great shells. I'd highly recommend this beach for shelling. Our kids loved it!
