Top 10 Things to do in San Giovanni d'Asso, Tuscany

October 5, 2021 Jacquiline Darosa

About a 25-mile drive southeast of Siena in the rolling hills of Tuscany’s Crete Senesi region, San Giovanni d'Asso is home to just a few hundred people. The highlight is the 12th-century castle, which now houses town offices. Directly opposite the castle is Villa San Giovanni, complete with a hanging garden, which is rentable by the week. The town is home to two lovely old churches, San Giovanni Battista and San Pietro in Villore. Every November, San Giovanni d'Asso holds a Truffle Festival.

ENGLISH VERSION The first Italian truffle Museum is housed within the fourteenth-century castle basement, which has an important decorative fresco cycle. The path begins with "the mystery of the truffle": between sorcery, science and eroticism, telling of the legend that wanted it originated by a lightning until reaching scientific definition itself. To follow are proposed sensory experiences through pathways that involve touch, hearing, taste and smell, obviously the fulcrum remains the truffle which is presented in conjunction with other components of its ecosystem. To the sight are dedicated many multimedia contributions in the section "the truffle, the dog and the man", made to give scientific information on truffles, show some aspects of the process of collecting and present the truffle-hunter's irreplaceable companion: the dog. The last section of the Museum displays a frugal peasant kitchen in opposition to an high-bourgeois one and investigates the techniques of collection, storage and use in the kitchen. The visit ends with a section dedicated to wild herbs and the documentation centre that allows visitors to further deepen the knowledge on the truffle.
