We have started taking our 5 year old grandson on historical vacations each year and this was a great stop. He really enjoyed being able to see it set up in what seemed real settings for each exhibit.. Of course he loved the train, carousel and the overall western theme. We are ready to go back ourselves, to see all we missed as you could spend hours looking at exhibits that a 5 year old doesn’t have patience for. But he still talks about it and wants to come back. So it goes back on list for next year.

Nationally recognized as “one of the 50 most unusual Museums in the country,” the Glore Psychiatric Museum takes visitors across the wide span of historical treatment of mental illness. Exhibits illustrate the changing face of psychiatric treatment and present the history of “State Lunatic Asylum No. 2” hospital.
This museum is deceptively large with an impressive collection of items from the history of mental health treatment at St. Joseph hospital.
Cost for admission is modest given the size of the museum. The hospital portion is three floors with additional wings off some of the floors for additional features unrelated to the hospital.
The museum allows the visitor to also learn about the inhabitants as people. I found the displays of patient needlework to be particularly interesting. This is definitely a great stop for anyone interested in mental health or history.

The museum is older but it contains lots of historical information. Watch the movie at the beginning of the museum. It really helps set the stage. The documentary helps set the visit experience and gives good historical information. Thanks for taking the time to watch the movie.

Overlooking the Missouri River, this center caters to history and nature buffs alike. Peer into a 7,000-gallon freshwater aquarium; explore the history of the St. Joseph area; stand trunk to nose with a woolly mammoth replica. See our website for a complete listing of activities, sights and adventures.
This is a great facility with many hands on activities. Check the calendar for fun family activities... even feeding the fish each month is an interesting experience. My grandchildren are of different ages, from 3-13, and there is something for each of them.
When you are finished, take a walk along the river!

Happened to be in town for the first night of the season, and it was wonderful. Wasn't sure how my pre-teens would enjoy the play, but they loved it. The theater is beautiful. It reminds me of the Fox in St. Louis. The only issues I had were that everything such as bathrooms and drinks are all on the second floor. Not very convenient. However, I didn't bother with it. I was there to enjoy a great play with my kids and we did. The caliber of the actors was high. They did a fabulous job. If you can catch a play here when coming through then you should definitely work it into your schedule. It's a wonderful way to spend an evening.

Drove through the park and went for a walk. Some areas, like the amphitheater, are well-kept. Other areas, such as " The Castle" appear older and more neglected. Nice small lake with fishing allowed. Playground with picnic areas too. Roads in park are one way.

I was surprised at how small the Jesse James home was. It was interesting to see the displayed items of the time period.

This monument sits in the center of St Joe and is in the middle of a small green area. It is very easy to get to and a quick stop is all that is needed to see it and take some photos. It is right by the art museum.

The Walter Cronkite Memorial was the vision of Dr. Robert Vartabedian, President of Missouri Western State University, to create a fitting memorial to St. Joseph's beloved native son and one of the most important and trusted voices in our country's history. Dr. Vartabedian's vision was captured by Missouri Western art faculty members Eric Fuson and David Harris, who designed the unique artistic display illustrating Cronkite's distinguished career with CBS television. This memorial was made possible with funding from the David and Shirley Bradley Endowment. Much like Walter Cronkite, the Bradley family has left a journalistic legacy by bringing the important news of the day to the general public. We are grateful for their many contributions to the St. Joseph community and to Missouri Western State University.
Put on the glasses and pretend you are Walter Cronkite do a newscast. The memorial is set up to take a picture that prints out right away. An amusing diversion!

We’ve been to quite a few art museums in this country and others, and too often, we feel overwhelemed by the sheer volume of visual stimulation. This is a good sized-museum. It’s a very nice place, relatively small, the art is well-displayed and well-lighted, and it’s never very busy. I especially like the room in the museum’s northwest corner highlighting Southwest art, and don’t miss the basement and the meandering art library down there! I appreciate that they allow photos (without flash), and the grounds are very nice.
