Orlova Chuka Cave

Reviewed By 840gabrielh - Bellaire, United States

The Orlova Chuka cave is located on the Northern shore of the Cherni Lom river, about 45 km South of Ruse, and therefore, South of the Danube river. It lies about 3 km from the town of Pepelina, the closest settlement to the caves. The caves are about 13 km long, 3 km of which can be visited. The rest is still under exploration and not accessible by the public. Orlova Chuka was discovered accidentally by a local shepherd in 1941 and was opened to visitors in 1952. It has multiple compartments, many with specific names, such as the Concert Hall, the Large Gallery, the Big Screes, the Cosmic Hall, etc. Interesting rock formations are also on display: the DInosaur, the Turtle, the Owl among others. In addition to the geological interest and the amazing views, the cave also houses 14 different bat species and it is pa rt of the Rusenski Lom Nature Park, one of 11 nature parks designated by the Bulgarian governments and protected by the Ministry of Environment and Water. The cave is open to visitors between April and October, seven days a week, between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. The token entrance fee includes the guide, since the cave can only be visited on a guided tour.

Ruse is an open, pretty, neatly structured and good-atmosphere-breathing city. This square is no exception. Pleasant for walking around or sitting on one of the benches. Surrounded by nice architecture.

Sexaginta Prista Fortress and Museum

Reviewed By ChristianG27 - Sofia, Bulgaria

The fortress is nothing much but there is a WWII German Bunker which may be of interest to war enthusiasts. However the lady guide in the small museum makes all the difference. There is hardly any other tourist guide in Bulgaria, who will fill you in on Ruse history and fun facts. When visiting do not miss to see the video film in the museum, it will give you many ideas for various trips in the region to other archaeological remains.

Rousse Museum of History

Reviewed By fjane84 - Island of Malta, Malta

This is a well organised and explained museum containing excavated finds from ruse and the area around, from the prehistoric period to victorian times. There is a good amount of displays for prehistoric and Roman artefacts, with less on Thracian discoveries. There is also a good section on the goths and medieval times. All areas have lots of information in English and artefacts are well displayed. There are seats at regular intervals. At only 5 leva (2.50 euro) each it is well worth it, and gives a good impression of the history of the area. There are also leaflets in english to buy about the local historical sights and trinkets. The staff and very helpful and speak good English.

Danube River

Reviewed By Companion765699 - Utrecht, The Netherlands

Ruse is a pleasant city to walk around: open, structured and it breathes a good atmosphere. Part of this is related to the ability of walking along the Danube. There are lots of open spaces and plenty benches to sit down and oversee the river and overthink life.

Interesting place with a lot of history. Definitely worth the time. Friendly staff, and easy to get too, encompassing a large chunk of Bulgarian railway history. It is housed in the first railway station built in Bulgaria in 1866
