Race track on which NASCAR races are run.
What an incredible experience. I am not a Nascar fan, but this place was packed and fun as hell ! Absolute blast, and everyone was having a great time.
-Never got around to the review... I went back in 2010. Been to a few more races since then. Enjoyed Bristol too

The Smith River Sports Complex is a dynamic, multi-purpose athletic and recreation facility. It started with soccer, but it is much more than soccer! Seven field sports are now represented at the Complex: Soccer, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee, Football, Flag Football and T-Ball! The fields can be rented for tournaments, league games, clinics, camps, practices, band competitions, or group outings. There are also two Picnic Shelter Pavilions and a Meeting Room that can be rented for church, school or company events. We have paved and unpaved walking trails around the entire Complex. Children can come to play on our state-of-the-art EVOS playground system that builds core strength all while having fun! You can also use our Smith River Kayak and Canoe Access to paddle on the river. There are many different ways you can use the Complex!
Level paved walking paths, trails, kayak launching area, numerous soccer and sports fields and an Evos play area. Great place to spend time with the family. Large picnic shelters are great for groups or parties.
Great staff running this facility!

We visited Infinity Acres for the ribbon-cutting open house. There were a lot of other community-based organizations in attendance that day to show off what is offered in the community. Our children (ages 5 and 11) enjoyed petting the animals and riding the miniature horse carriages. It was great to see all the improvements to the ranch since my visit last summer. However, I was a little disappointed that the big barn and duck pond was not able to be toured during our visit. Please call before visiting to ensure you are able to tour the barn & lake areas.

We visited the Eden Drive-In last night with our family of 5 and had a great time! Cars 3 and Captain Underpants were the double-feature. We live about 1 hour, 15 minutes away and it was well worth the drive. Eden features a full service grill with popcorn, drinks, burgers, hot dogs, pizza, nachos and ice cream at very reasonable prices. They also allow outside food, so you can arrive early (gates open at 6:30 pm, movie starts at dark) and eat dinner or bring your own food and have a picnic.
You can sit outside your vehicle if you bring your own folding chairs, or retreat to the large deck with seating on the hill in front of the restaurant. The cost was very reasonable considering we took 2 adults and 3 kids to see 2 first-run movies for a little over $30.00. The bathrooms are reasonably clean and very accessible.
A few tips -
If you have kids, bring a frisbee, football or other outdoor activity toys and send them off to play in the field.
Bring a portable radio if you're sitting outside your vehicle and you're worried about running down your battery. The theater broadcasts the audio on FM 88.9.
Bug spray is a huge bonus during the summer months.
Be aware that a double-feature will run late into the night (12:45-1:00am) so bring pillows and blankets for the kids.

Fieldale is a very cute little community and this trail is just around the corner from the city park, which has a very neat old iron bridge, and just down the hill from the downtown area. There is good parking at the trail head and there is another trail just across the road that winds along Smith River. The Textile Heritage Trail is mostly crushed granite trail but there's a little boardwalk too. There are six panels along the trail that tell the history of the textile industry in the area. Since most of the big companies that came into the area in the beginning have been lost, the story is a little depressing but there is no rule saying that you have to read the placards. The trail itself if very pretty and winds back and forth through the woods.I think that people who like outdoor trails will really like this one.

When I first visited Mayo River State Park, I knew it was a work in progress but I didn't know how big of a park it actually is. I've only recently discovered the Wiki page that says that it is over 2,000 acres and discovered that the local waterfall is part of it. If you go up DeShazo Road, there is a trailhead to go to Fall Creek Falls. The entry has pylons to prevent ATVs from coming in. The trail is wide and mostly level, with a steep part only at the falls themselves but I my 70-year old mother made it down and up with minimal help (a strategic push up the incline). The falls are beautiful and well worth the exploration. We passed people both going in and coming out so it is fairly well-trafficked.

The Gravely Preserve is a 75-acre park in Ridgeway that butts up to the Smith River and is part of the Smith River Trails. There are several trails in the park and we walked the Cliff Jones trail this past weekend. Word to the wise, start on the end where the tobacco barn is (it is numbered #1). If you go the other way, you'll start off having to go up an incline because the end of the trail goes downhill. It's not bad going down but I wouldn't want to go up it. The trail is easy and mostly level (except for the decline at the very end).
I had expected more placards about the tobacco industry along the Cliff Jones trail but that first one is the only one I saw. The other marked points of interest along the trail are just identifying different trees, with the notable exception of the Burgess Family Cemetery about midway along the trail. There are quite a few old graves there but they aren't really being maintained and a lot of the older ones have fallen over and broken. The oldest dates back to 1882.
There are a couple of other trails that lead off from the Cliff Jones Trail that look interesting. There is a Rhododendron Trail that is supposed to go through a tunnel of rhododendrons (which bloom in May, so that should be something to see if timed right), the Burgess Loop loops back to where the old Burgess house site was, and a River View trail. You'll need time if you want to walk them all.
If the Cliff Jones Trail was all that was there, I'd give the preserve 3 stars (average) but the number of trails and variety of things to see bumps it up to 4 (very good).

Scale models of dinosaurs and actual tracks of these great beasts of the past are featured through innovative exhibits, lectures and educational activities.
There were nice displays of dinosaurs and other critters found in Virginia. Plus you could also observe labs for paleontology and archaeology. My favorite displays were in the "Uncovering Virginia" gallery. The Grundy and Saltville exhibits were most interesting to me. Saw other families visiting and a number of children in the classrooms who were having fun.

The Eden Historical Museum is a very good local museum. It has attractive and imformative exhibits. It is open from 10-4 on Saturdays. You should certainly stop for a visit when in the area. There is a $1 charge to tour the museum....a good bargain!

Lovely grounds and cozy tasting room make this a place we check out ever few months or so. Never disappointed. Wish they had a few sandwiches or a substantial appetizer to keep us there without having to leave to seek a meal.
