Everything you read about this ride that is wonderful is true. One warning. Just before you go across Scottsburg bridge, the road is very narrow especially on the east side. Time your going into the corner when there are no big trucks, motorhomes or big trailers sharing it with you. The new bridge should be finished by the end of 2021. Stop at Dean Creek Elk Durelk season is when you see the most elk. Wonder why, Lol.

A forty-mile recreational area along the coast of Oregon consisting of thirty lakes, dunes, campgrounds and hiking trails.
Oregon dunes are some of the largest I’ve ever seen. We’re used to seeing Oceano in Pismo and these are way bigger. Rental places are available for ATV’s and UTV’s as well as a non vehicle area for finding sand dollars. Great recreational area and just a few miles from our rental home on Tenmile Lake in Lakeside.

Elk! There seem to be elk here most of the time. We stopped on our way to the coast and on our way back and saw elk both times. The pullout is easy and has bathrooms (closed due to covid on our visit) and signage. We saw a herd of female elk and a herd of male elk, both very close. Great way to see elk close by. Bring binoculars for an even better look. Birds are also in the area...saw redwing black birds and lots of blue and rust-colored barn swallows. Their nests are all around the covered viewing area. This is a pullout right off the road; so, extremely convenient and easy stop on a road trip. You can also see the elk from your car as you drive through the area, but it's worth the stop.

Fun for the whole family! Hike the natural history and learn about the plants and animals of tidewater country. Slide into the bear den and visit a weather station. Then you will travel back in time to learn about the early Kuuich tribe, days of early logging, and visit a tidewater town.
It is obvious from the moment you walk into the Umpqua Discovery Center that much pride and attention to detail was put into this lovely little museum. While features like the slide into the bear den are obviously geared toward children, the adults in our party also found plenty of interesting exhibits to view and learned a lot. We were especially impressed with how clean and well-organized this museum was and how pretty the setting was as well. If you like learning about local history and ecology or if you have children in your group this is definitely worth a stop.
